Recently (this season and last summer) we have had a big problem with fleas at our lake house. My dog is an outside dog mostly and comes inside on occasion (bad weather/ extreme heat). He gets regular Frontline treatments and wears a flea collar. I put have put out flea bombs, steam cleaned the carpets, vacuumed, and kept the dog out but they seem to come back again especially when it gets warmer. We have been keeping the air off (the past two summers) when no one is there... could that be a reason my house is a breeding ground lately? Has anyone had the same problem? Can anyone recommend a remedy or good exterminator?

Do you happen to use pine straw in your landscaping? Ticks and fleas like pine straw for nesting. It may be that your dog is picking up the fleas from outside the house. I was told by the pest control guy to replace outside pine straw every year. I thought that was a strange recommendation because I've never had a problem with it, but I don't have a pet either. It's funny that it was just yesterday that the conversation happened.

We had a problem years ago, and the exterminator told us that you have to kill the adult fleas with one spraying, and then spray again in 21 days to kill the next hatching. The poison doesn't kill the eggs in the carpet so the room must be retreated. Maybe this info is still up to date.

I am allergic to the bites of little buggers...hate em"!! I've also learned how to kill them, and it's not easy with a bad infestation. Adults can lay eggs every day for several months. Eggs can take from a few days to a few weeks to hatch. Larva are then present for 1-3 weeks and from a cocoon. Adults come out of the cocoon in as little as a week and can stay there for as long as several months. AC will slow the life cycle, so don't worry about that while trying to kill them.
You will need a lot of bug bombs because it sounds like you have a bad infestation. You will also need to spray your entire yard with bug killer. I suggest you bug bomb your house every week for at least 3 straight weeks. If you see any flees after that, do it again, wait a week and give it another shot. Don"t skimp on the bombs and don't forget the crawl space and the attic areas. The key is killing the adults before they can lay eggs. You will still get eggs hatching and cocoons opening after you bomb, so you must be persistent. You may also want to put down some indoor insect killer, around the walls and on the carpet. Keep kids and pets from rolling around on the carpet while your doing this. Also, spray your entire yard (ALL OF IT, including pine straw, beds,
grass, etc). I suggest Bayer Advanced complete insect killer (available
at Home Depot).....don't use the minimum coverage either. Re-use the
Bayer every 2 months. Once the problem is under control, you may want to steam clean the carpet. Good Luck, cause flees suck.

Thanks so much! I guess I will head down there for the afternoon and work on some of this! It drives me crazy that we have this problem at the lake and not at the regular house! The lake is for relaxing! Oh well, I guess while the bomb is doing it's job I'll just have to retreat to the pier! Found the names of a few exterminators around town so I'll let them take care of the whole yard.

The yard is the easiest part. The spray I mentioned comes in a bottle that hooks up to a garden hose; just start spraying until the bottle is empty.......

I wouldn't mind doing that but our yard is more "natural" than landscaped. The majority is woodsy and lots of space under the house that would be hard for me to get to. I could probably get the back porch, one side of the house and the front, but the rest would need some kind of fire hose action. :) It's all worth a shot though I guess!

Forget the Frontline for your dog. You are just poisoning him. Why don't you use the ever popular Adams Flea Spray on him everytime you bring him in? It's organic and fleas and ticks will drop off of him almost instantly. Otherwise I don't think you'll solve the problem. You'll just get more hatching from the fleas your dog and maybe you bring in. You'll be bombing the house all the time and instead of poisoning the dog you'll be poisoning your family. It IS a bad bug year.....
