3 years ago I was shopping for a new Seadoo.  My wife and I stopped into Kowaliga Marine after church and I ask a salesman on the floor to price a PWC on display.  I had been doing some research on the Seadoo website and knew the price he gave me was considerably higher than "list price".  When I told the salesman that I could purchase the boat at a lower price from Sylacauga, he proceeded to explain to me that Russell "test drove" every boat during the in-service while Sylacauga did not.  The crowning statement though was that were I to buy in Sylacauga and ever need warranty or maintenance on my boat I would automatically go to the end of the line in the shop and stay their until such time that all Russell Marine customers were completed.

I would not buy a used life jacket from these people.

Did this really happen three years ago or was that a mistype? I would take that line about service work with a grain of salt. The guys in the service dept could care less as they get paid the same regardless of where the boat was purchased. Its just another service job to them. Have you looked at the Yamaha's? I have looked at both products and my personal opinion is the Yamaha is a better jet ski.

We bought our Pontoon Boat from Russell Marine and our experience couldn't have been more different than what you described. Our salesman, Chris, was great and we got a very good deal. And the service department has never asked us if we bought our boat there before scheduling an appointment. We bought our bass boat a Sylacauga Marine and they were great too.

I gotta tell you - Harbor Point Marina has it going on It's NOT a Russell Marina The gas has NO ethanol and the service is the best I have ever had, Very fair pricing on boats & even at the ship store as well

My belief is a "good deal" is in the eye of the beholder. It's not always about price and bottom line is more important to some than others. I think Russell is competitive in the way they like to be competitive. For instance, I use Russell for almost all my building materials. Their contractor pricing is in line with big box suppliers and they give much better service. When it comes to boats and marine equipment, my personal experience has lead me in other directions. I have purchased 12 different watercraft in the last 9 years and none have been from Russell; I gave them a chance, but it never seems to work out. Half of these purchase were on new equipment, and Russell did give me the story about being first in line for service and emergency help (if needed) on the lake.....That was not important to me, but it may be to others. In all cases, I paid  anywhere from 20-35% less than any deal Russell was able to make (for a similar or identical product).

Bottom line is that Russell charges a premium for convince. It's for each to decide if that convience is worth the price, or if they can do better elsewhere. Fortunately, we have many choices. In my case, their marinas have been unable to provide what I need other than an occasional part for which I'm willing to pay a premium.

I agree with U. M. If you are happy, then any deal is a " good deal ", regardless of what other might say. A good friend once told me that the farther away from the lake he got, the better the prices. I believe him, but will support the marinas whenever possible, just will not throw money away.

The SanPan pontoon boat we bought from Russell was the end of the year boat; althought it was brand new. We paid approximately 20% of the MSRP. Russell also threw in a six month free covered storage for the boat until my boat house could be built. They further provided an additional $200.00 that could be used for fuel or service at the marina. I will say they were motivated since we bought right after the bad drought season when the Lake was way down, and they had a ton of inventory. We did not check away from the Lake, but we did shop every major Marina on the Lake that sold SanPan, Harris, Bennington and a couple of other major brands. It was the best deal by far we could get on an equivalent boat. So, our purchase was based upon a quality boat at the best sale price based upon our shopping. It had nothing to do with any other sales pitch mumbo jumbo.

no misunderstanding here; sometimes it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Any way you look at it..... if you're still happy, you got a good deal in my book.

How did you get Russell to sell any thing for  20% of the MSRP?

Most of the higher ups are my friends,  but I never got anything close to an 80% discount!

I guess it's not who you know but who you blow.
