Unfortunately for those of us on the northwest side of the lake, the restaurants up and down the 49 and 34 corridors are just too long a drive.

There are several restaurants advertised in Alex City.  Other than Cecil's, which has been a great disappointment to us on more than one occasion (slow learner?), are any of them good?

Steak?

Seafood?

Mexican?

Sports Bar?

Looking for recommendations (other than chains).

Thanks!

I have found that it's cheaper to cook the same stuff restaurants make at home. Cheaper and usually better!

As you know, it is dismal on our side of the Lake. The Mexican place on 280 next to the car wash is just as good as it's Sister on 280 in Dadeville. The new pizza place on Cherokee next to the GM Dealer (I think it is the Buick Dealer) is OK (actually pretty good for the South) and you can have all you want at their pizza lunch buffet. The chicken fingers and wings are good at JimBobs over next to the movie theater. We suffered a major loss when Mama Ella passed away. There is a place called Bucks on 22 East (other side of 22 from us Lake folks) just out of town. It brings in a big crowd of locals. We have been there once, and I had the whole catfish. It was good and the sides were good. Lot of the locals seemed to be ordering the burger which looked good. Sylacauga is not any further from us than Niffers, Oskars and etc. in Dadeville. The Marble Grill in Downtown Sylacauga is very good. There BLT sandwich is amazing. I have never seen so much bacon on a piece of bread. There chicken basket is the best around. Go there on Thursday evening and listen to the local Elvis at Karoke night. The food want make you sick, but Elvis is guaranteed to either make you puke or plug your ears one. Buttermilk Hill is almost like a Cecils except the food is great. I have attached their web site below. You will need reservations. I think Bruce the WebMaster told us about it. We have had several meals there (both lunch an dinner). The food and service has always been good. On Rt. 9 beyond Santuck is a catfish place called Trumans. I think it is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The catfish there has always been good. There are no good seafood, steak, Chinese or BBQ places, I know of, anywhere within thirty miles of us.

There is a sports bar in Alex City called JRs. I haven't been, so can't say what they serve or what kind of place it is. There is Jakes which in the "shopping center" on the main street. They have steak at dinner. Not much else. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it -- cheap meat for a higher price than it deserves. They are also open on Sundays -- never been on Sunday, and I suspect it may be a buffet, but couldn't swear to it. Lunch during the week is okay. There is a small restaurant in the back of Queen's Attic. I don't think they are open for dinner, but understand that they serve breakfast as well as lunch. The lunch menu, while limited, is very good. And the Wine Emporium next to Queen's Attic has tapas and wine by the glass. Not sure what the hours are. I would avoid the "City Buffet" on 280. Their posted health rating score is in the 80s. There is a quasi-chinese restaurant on Cherokee right by the movie theatre. I've only eaten there once, and didn't think it was very good, but that was several years ago.

Thanks to all...I was intrigued by the tapa place and we may try it some time.  I think probably the problem is that the restaurants on the east side cater to lake folk; the Alex City places cater to the Alex City folk.

My wife and I tried Trumans once...had fried shrimp, and it tasted like it had been in the freezer at least six months.  Never went back.  JRs is just a sports bar with wing/fingers/burgers, etc, and is unremarkable.

Cecils is the closest to having a decent menu but the service has been horrid...uh, no, that is too kind.  The girls that work there couldn't give a whit about customers...and the food is blah.  I was embarrased to tears one time when I had my customer and another gent in town - and wanted to go to Sinclairs but got there and they were closed.  We ended up at Cecils...what a Hungarian jug &^*% that was.  Food orders were all wrong and food was almost inedible.

I guess we can keep hoping.  At this point I'd almost wecome Western Sizzlin back...:>(  But the grill still works and the refrigerator keeps the libations at a proper temperature, so all is not lost!

If you ever venture as far as Wetumpka/Redland Road, the Ox Yoke puts out a decent steak.  When they first strted in the old Ezell's building their steaks were...uh....catered to a different clientele but they have really improved, and the prices aren't bad.

True, but every now and then you just want to say "screw it, lets let somebody else cook tonight".  Makes one appreciate the home cooking even more.

You like the meat smothered in sauce. I'd rate it as mediocre.

We found the bbq there OK and ate there numerous times. Then, our visits ceased after spotting a couple of roaches on the wall in the corner booth. This was about two years ago. The roaches did not bother me nearly as much as they did my wife. I agree with RR on the over-saucing. Of course, you can request no sauce, but it does not help the bbq quality any. Maybe, the sauce is a roach favorite. lol

Have seen the place a number of times, but have never eaten there. The Italian place in Wetumpka is pretty decent. It's on 231. Most of the time, I would rather eat at home than eat out in Alex City.

Jakes is the best Alex City has to offer. Wetumpka has Out Place. Sylacauga has Buttermilk.

If you can afford it then I have to say Spring House at Russell Crossings makes the most amazing dishes. Chef Rob and his staff are so meticulous from polishing the silver to preparing the meals. You need to send off for the Rosetta Stone Language course to actually read the wine menu or you can request the waitress "Lacey" who knows everything about wine, how to explain it and what it goes good with. Spring House is definitely a 5 star restaurant. Also for Chinese I recommend "MK's Asian Restaurant at Tiger Town in Opelika. A small place but the chef is amazing. Michael

I don't share your high opinion about Spring House. Have eaten there 5-6 times and I find it pretentious. I've eaten in 4-5 star restaurants all over the world and none were nearly as pretentious. Last time I ate there was lunch. The quiche was more like scrambled eggs in a crust. The only thing I've ever loved their was a smoke Quail appetizer. I'd drive to Montgomery and go to Garrett's before I'd go to Spring House again.

We will try Spring House one of these days -- seems the reviews are pretty polarized - ya either like it or ya don't.  Our problem is that, even taking back roads it is about a 40 mile round trip from our lake place - and if we were to be going there for a nice meal somehow the jostling, sometimes wet, sometimes dusty ride on the golf cart from the Russell landing doesn't jive with such an event.

Hound, for a Jersey gal you seem to be able to pick out the good places in MGM -- Peppertree, Garretts, etc. - ever eat at City Grill (very close to P'tree S&W) or Nobles downtown?  The new Chop House at Vintage Year?  I'm told they have some pretty exotic meats.

As far as AC goes maybe we'll try Jakes and the tapas place.  Will be a cold day in he!! before we go back to Cecils.

And IF I can talk my wife into it, maybe we'll venture as far as Sylacauga and try out Buttermilk Hill.

Thanks again to all for the information.

I haven't eaten at City Grill yet. Just discovered it since I found the Vintage Olive. Do try Spring House. Make your reservations and then run the gamut from the greeter, the hostess to the server... and make sure you tell them you want to sit INSIDE if it is a typical steamy summer night. Maybe you'll like it. You do know the "shortcut" from our side of the lake. Make the right at that little church before you get to Neighbors Farm and follow those little back roads? Much quicker than going via AC.

Yes - a couple county roads to Elkahatchee Road to 63.  Went that way to Catherine's once for S&Gs - still not exactly around the corner...maybe 18 miles or so from our place one way.  Since we are part timers it is hard to get motivated to get back in the car...and the 22/280 intersection is a full five miles closer.  But, alas, there apparently isn't anything worthwhile at the end of that shorter drive....:>)

I can appreciate that. Once you make the drive in from Montgomery, it's hard to get excited about driving some more just to eat dinner. I go to Montgomery at least once a week, sometimes twice.

they do have good margaritas. and Feb is right about the food being as good as the one in Dadeville... some things even better. their shrimp tacos are really good! Feb, the chinese place in Sylacauga used to be EXCELLENT, but went a few weeks ago and it was not what i remembered at all. and the Chinese place in AC is down right scarry!

Now we're talking!

Have eaten fish tacos but not shrimp - are the shrimp grilled or fired?  Either way it sounds delicious.  Thanks.
