For the record, the "lake cleanup" that was scheduled for May 7th was part of the annual "Renew Our Rivers" campaign and had been scheduled long before the tornado struck Lake Martin. The decision was made to cancel that particular cleanup because it was not designed to handle debris of this magnitude and scope. The organizers did not want to risk injury to any of the volunteers. The Marine Police Division agreed to send out the news release announcing the cancellation through its media list. We did not "force" anyone to cancel that particular event or any other lake cleanup.

As for any plans to cleaning up the debris all I can say is that a plan is being formulated and as soon as possible the details will be released. For this weekend you can look for the remaining debris areas to be marked by Hazard Buoys and for signs warning boaters of the dangers to be placed at all public launching areas.

As always, common sense is encouraged and hoped for.

Thanks for the update. It would be nice if the various parties could decide how future disasters will be handled before it strikes rather than after. It is rather amazing that we can rush aid and cleanup help to other countries but in Alabama USA we sit powerless.

Good point, when there is an overseas emergency, the planes are loaded on the tarmac before the wind stops blowing...

Speaking of debris and wind, yesterday and today winds have been blowing fairly strong out of the south for the most part due to a system of storms that are moving toward this area.  That is a different direction than prevailing winds blew over the past week.   The point is: things are on the move again so watch out.  Until the cleanup takes place, use caution.

Thanks for the info Capt Brooks.  Can you tell us where the buoys will be located, this will give folks a "heads up" , as to what locales to avoid.  I was on the lake last Tuesday, saw the devastation, and was very surprised to see no debris in the lake.  I know there is debris there and will use the lake with extreme caution.

Rather amazing we pay FEMA, EMA etc and no one ran such a scenario.  Unbelievable at best, derelection of duty is more like it.
