It will get cleaned up eventually.  There are just more important areas and issues to deal with across the state other than debris floating in Lake Martin.  If you don't feel safe don't go out.  If you go out and hit something it's your own fault.  Everyone knows the situation. Your boating at your own risk.  Deal with it.  There are people dealing with a whole lot more than avoiding a 2X4 with their pontoon boat.

Wix, comments not directed at you but rather all complainers about the debris.

I haven't seen a lot of complaining about the debris itself, so much as folks being frustrated with the lack of information on cleanup.

And I also get the sense that those of us frustrated about the lack of information on cleanup are willing to roll up their/our sleeves and pitch in to help.  Its just that if we strike out on our own cleanup and end up with our pontoon boat loaded with debris - especially dangerous debris with nails and screws hanging out - what do we do with it?  Kizma suggested a bonfire.  Maybe that's not such a bad idea as long as it is an organized, controlled burn, with pre-planning for fire protection to outlying areas and so forth.

In any case we will be on the water this weekend and if we see anything will pick it up....especially if it poses a danger to boats and more importantly kids.  We'll figure out what to do with it AFTER we ensure it isn't going to rip some unsuspecting kid's leg open.

Peace...

If cleaning up the lake would take anything away from anyone that suffered a loss from the tornados, I would agree with you 100%, but a barge and crane company really is a specialized company that can't do much land clean up; therefore, cleaning up the lake won't delay helping clean up the land. The problem is with the paper pushers, and the lack of experience of the bureaucrats in positions to move the process forward. Too much political positioning and too little making it happen.

I agree with you. A little inconvenience for such a small segment of all affected.

Wix, I totally agree with you. Lake Martin is at the bottom of the pencil pushers list. Solution seems easy enough but nobody wants to pay. Really it should be the resonsiblity of our governor and the state. The debris problem is to big and costly to handle on the local government level. The state should step up and handle it. But what are they doing, waiting on the feds like everybody else. Everyone expects the federal government to handle it. Insurance company's should be handling some of it too. If a debris pile from a home is halfway on shore and half in the water they should pick up the tab. But guess what, they are waiting to pay claims to see what the feds will do to try and keep as much money in their pockets.

Toon, ordinarily I would agree with you.  But being a business on or very near the lake means we have only a few months to make the vast majority of our income to stay in business.  Tourism is our life blood.  If it were just me running around in a boat, I could give a rat if I do or don't this summer.  I can guarantee you there is no BP to hand out billions to those impacted by the storm. The Gulf tourist industry seems to have lost some 25-35% last year.  The drought cost me nearly 60%.  Oh yes, I could get a low interest loan said our Feds during the drought.  Loan?  Don't you gotta have something like Income to pay for a loan? So heck yeah, I am not just a bit inconvienenced by this lack of getting something done.

And yes, very frustrated at the lack of communications.

good post. I agree with you. Those wanting people to "deal with it/more important issues, etc" totally miss the point. Our lake community has an economic engine that gets most of its income over a 5 month timeframe. Lack of activity on the lake means many local businesses will suffer. Cleaning up the lake is important to do now---for two reasons, safety of boaters and economic impact on our community--in that order. Are there more important areas and destruction? Of course. Most of us have to deal with more than one problem at a time, and do so daily. We need to aggressively remove the barrier to safety and economic health of our community. That is important--also.
