My daughter and her boyfriend were driving from the Dixie sailing club late yesterday afternoon and witnessed the immediate aftermath of  a horrible accident involving a motorcycle on the Windemere road.

Anybody know who it was or what happened?  Hoping the guy is okay.

We passed by on the way home from my parents house and saw the burning motorcycle and sheriff cars at the scene. The info I have is second and 3rd hand (accuracy unverified), but my mother called and said the rider was a young man visiting friends in their neighborhood. He may have been racing and lost control. She was told it was a fatal accident.

Yes, so sad.  I heard it was fatal too.  My daughters boyfriend was one of the ones first on the scene.
He was pretty shook up.  He also has a motorcycle (which we do not allow our daughter to ride on) but, I think he is now having second thoughts about owning one after this experience.  I think thats a good decision.

Motorcycles are dangerous machines. I've had several over the years, but sold the last street bike after a guy almost ran me over at a stop sign (with my daughter on back) in 2003. I had to pop the clutch to take evasive actions and then layed the bike down to get clear. The guy said he didn't even see me. Even an excellent rider is at the mercy of others and the others are almost always in a bigger and heavier vehicle.

It sounds like the accident yesterday may have been self induced, but it's still a very sad situation. My prayers go out to the family.

As 'they' say, buy your child a motorcycle for their last birthday!

Riding street bikes, off and on for 35 years. Big city while in college, suburban and rural for the last 5 years. Took up riding regular for my mid life crisis, and clicked up about 50,000 miles over the last 5 years. Any road from New Orleans to Tunica to Myrtle Beach to Key West at any time. Had a few scares but generally ride leaving lots of room for my clear view and with the full knowledge that A) I AM INVISIBLE TO EVERYONE IN A CAR OR TRUCK and B) IF THEY CAN SEE ME, THEY ARE OUT TO GET ME. The shame is that riding is just so much fun. If I were the Man, all drivers would be required to ride scooters/motorcycles for 2 years before they were eligible to operate a car or truck.

I pretty much had the same riding philosophy....It's hard to believe a person couldn't see a red chromed out Road King Classic with 2 people wearing red white and blue flag helmets at a 4 way stop, but it happend. I had some other close calls with folks turning into me, but when it happened with my daughter on back something just clicked; I decided that was enough. I replaced it with a 2 seat roadster convertible with air bags and a roll bar.....

RKC rider here as well with chrome add ons making it about 50# heavier than a loaded Ultra. I see a roadster in my future too but not until the hip says I can't throw that leg over the saddle anymore. My bride got tired of looking at the DOT sticker on my helmet and last May bought a new Street Glide. She bought the bike 4 weeks after she passed her motorcycle safety course on a Sunday, secured her endorsement Tuesday at 2 pm, took my bike Tuesday at 3pm and by Tuesday 4pm had sideswiped a car. Only injuries were to sheetmetal and pride. My bike was repaired and enhanced of course, and since, she has put nearly 7000 miles on hers. Someone needs to get Casey out for a ride on American Iron, at dusk when the bugs dont hurt nearly as bad and are easier to chew. I'm guessing Casey would be repeating a different tune.

I rode fo rmany years.  Did a bit of amature track racing.  Yet I still managed to pull right out in front of a bike that had his headlight on (not required back then). Did not see him at all.  If the guy hadn't made the right moves I'd of caused a real bad wreck.  It just happens.  Real bottom line.  It doesn't matter who is at falt, bike and rider lose.
