Verizon. However, not so fast. T-Mobile is not far behind. I have both right now as I am switching from Verizon while saving about 150/mo. Have 5 phones, two of which are smartphones with unlimited plans.
Suggestion. Sign up and get a basic phone from each. Try em out and cancel within the two week cancellation period. Only out the two cheapie phones. You will soon find out which works best for you.

Testimonial. Parker Creek area. 4 cellphones side by side. 2 Verizon and 2 AT&T. 3 of the 4 were "Free" phones under the contract. The fourth was a SmartPhone/Android thingy that was not free.
Neither AT&T phone had service at all. The Verizon freeby had 1 bar. The "SuperPhone", which cost @$100?? 4 bars. No problem.
I am suspicious that the quality of "coverage" is dictated by the cost of your phone and the revenue generated for the carrier.
In other words, free phone/no data/no texting==== poor coverage.
Hi-Dollar phone with data/texting packages ==== good coverage.

Could be a better antenna in the droid phone?....also, according to prior conversations with my techno geek offspring, there are different signals for data and talking and download speeds and such; that may play into it and it costs more to make a phone to utilize the best technology (which also costs more). The providers make their money on the monthly bill and the complexity of the plan, and eat most of the cost of the equipment when you sign on under contract, so I would think better technology plays into your mini test.

No question technology plays a big part on "coverage". However, the bandwidth available at each wireless tower is limited by the size of the pipe that transports voice and data up and down to the network. Been there, done that, for many years.
So, given a finite pipe capacity, the best return on investment is to max out the more profitable services (data/text) over the pipe, and in heavy traffic periods, actually choke low revenue services(voice).
Technology allows that capability, also.
Wish I had had an AT&T Smartphone available for the comparison. That might have proved whether the "coverage" problem I have is due to my cheap phones or the distance to a tower.
