I recently received a 1986 Bayliner Capri with Volvo Penta AQ131A engine. The floor and transom are all rotten. I noticed that there are no motor mounts other than the transom. Anyone familiar with this setup? It is a small 4 cylinder and the engine is over the gas tank where the motor mounts would normally mount on the engine. It puts tremendous load on the lower transom bolts which on this boat have moved out about 1/2". Houseboat

not familiar with the setup, but it sounds like typical Bayliner engineering....cheap and mostly ineffective.

Reminds me of a quote heard in a LM area marina about twenty years ago. A friend was looking for a boat, and asked the salesman what he thought about Bayliner (a brand they did not sell); the salesman said "Just as soon have AIDS".... He did go on to explain the benefits of their boats, but that was funny. Disclaimer: I understand how AIDS impacts our country, and have lost a friend to the disease, so lighten up.

I agree that Bayliner is not the best boat on the market, but they do a great job with the hull especially with the transom. All boats that I have replaced the wood on the transom have approximately 3/16" thick fiberglass on the transom part of the hull, but a Bayliner has around 1/2" or more in the same area. The hull is usually pretty thick and strong. The bad part of a Bayliner is the cabinetry. They build everything in with plywood and just spray it with a little mixed chop and gel coat. If you have one I suggest never let it get wet inside or left out in the rain without being covered and ventilated. Houseboat
