Read link below for why so many of us are concerned with government regulation run amok.

Here is a comment ( I find it funny...some of you won't) from a reader of the referenced article:

COME ON AUDREY, you left out some of the details.

THE BATHROOM: "There must be a low-flow toilet, no more than 1.5 gallons, with heated toilet seat. Charmin, scented only, is the required paper. Bidets are also required. Showers must include Markham shampoos and conditioners. A stockpile of towels and wash cloths. Flea and tick medicine to be used on employee and their lover/partner while in the shower. Towels for goats must be kept in separate closet."

BEDROOMS: "Only one goat per person allowed in individual sleeping quarters. To alleviate jealousy and arguments leading to fights, individuals may claim their goat, including gay goats, as their own. Naming your goat is allowed but no goat can be named 'Obaaaaaama.'"

"Hola boss, what you doing in penthouse, I mean bunk house?" "I'm moving in here since it's fancier than where I live. Is that you Betsy? BETSY! Have you been cheating on me girl? You're a bbaaaadd girl!"

Some people probably found the child labor laws hysterical too and probably predicted the negative impact on business owners.

Now Hound, you know this stuff is significantly different than some of the silly regulations. My view is that the government's proper role is make sure a workplace is safe and that's it. If a company wants to provide crappy living quarters and that is important to you then go somewhere else to work. No one is stopping you. This is nanny state nonsense that just costs businesses unnecessary money and eliminates jobs. There are plenty of people that could care less about having a clean mattress if they have a good job.

In principle I agree with you, but when you read enough about the conditions for migrant workers (who are essential to our agricultural business) I can't help but feel that maybe these are necessary. I don't think uneducated people necessarily always have a lot of choice about moving to another job.

I guess my point is that they probably don't care if the bed is clean if they have a job. All that happens when you add these costs is more lost jobs. They need safe work conditions and I am totally on board with that. We spend a lot of money each year, including having a full time corporate health and safety officer that reports directly to me. And I am fine with common sense government regulations that make for a safe workplace. But all these other rules and regulations only hurt businesses and ultimately those people they want to employ. As for your comment about not being able to find other jobs, I think the evidence is that they can and will. There has been a large reverse migration to Mexico where unemployment is less than 5%. If they can go home to find a job they can certainly find another job here in the U.S. if they aren't offered a clean bed.

Well, the Alabama law on illegals has already had the desired effect.  Was in my favorite Mexican restaurant last night and the owner was lamenting that they had all moved to Louisiana or gone back to Mexico and he was having a very hard time finding help.  He says the same is true with the Chinese restaurants.

His answer is a liberal (easy, MM, it is a lower case "l"   LOL   ) work permit policy that would allow more immigrants to come in to the country legally, but only for a set period of time, and they would be required to pay all taxes.   It would reduce the violence along the border because they would simply fly or take a bus across the border, and the ones charging exorbitant fees to smuggle illegals across the border would be out of a job.  He says that the illegals work hard, stay out of trouble, and are grateful for the work, unlike a lot of the "entitled" US citizens who only want a paycheck and not a job.

When I was in high school, I worked one summer at a Greek restaurant. It was owned by one family. They all lived together and worked like dogs. Everything was made from scratch. I once asked one of them why they worked so hard. He told me that they were so grateful for being able to earn "so much money" that they could pay their expensive and save too. This week I had some landscaping work done. Two Hispanic guys (have no idea about their status) spent two days in the heat, digging out gravel with a shovel and a wheelbarrow. I think a lot of immigrants are hard workers, and are grateful for a good day's work.

Next week YOU best be checking their docs or YOU will find yourself in violation of state law. I haven't used illegals for anything, business or personal, since 1996. Even with building my home in 2004, my contract with the builder provided for penalties if he, or his subs, used illegals on my property. It cost me a point to include that provision. It could have cost him 6.5 points if he violated it.

I didn't employ them. They work for the landscaping company I used. I don't know that they are illegal. For all I know, they may have been born here.
