It would be nice if there was a fly tying place on the lake. Some place to buy good flies for the local fish, maybe float tubes and fly rods, tying supplies. Even fly tying classes every once in a while. Hmmm, where could we put one... maybe cathouse! That's it ! And I could be the fly guy. I'm glad you thought of that Cat, good idea.

in college, the 2 summers I spent away from the lake were: 1. working in Yellowstone NP and learning to flyfish, and 2. working in Bham at a fly shop.  I learned to tie there.  I think they were summers extremely well spent.  I can really see myself opening up a shop when I retire or win the lottery, whichever comes first.

the only fly I have ever come up for the lake that worked was a huge hexagenia nymph on a thin wire bent back hook.  I out caught my dad 3 to 1 - he was using poppers - at dusk in a mayfly hatch just south of the RR trestle.  I am still trying to find a good minnow pattern that can replicate the spot tails around Kowaliga, without being too bulky to cast.  I think it should go on a saltwater bent back hook but I can't get the spot right, although I haven't tried in quite a while.  My initial thought was to have my vise set up at my RE office and I could tie there when I had time, but.....

Sandy T - if you like fly of the month type clubs, I think a good one is at R and R Flyfishing.  They are really good guides out of Townsend, Tn.  Their fly of the month comes with a write up that explains how to tie it, usage, etc.  See link below.

We could always partner up! I tie a clouser minnow that works. Have you tried using a sharpie for the dot? Have you ever tied a crease minnow? That may be an option too.

I'm working on a chicken liver fly for catfish! jk.

was its name back in the day.  It was in a strip mall on Lorna Road in Hoover.  We used to test cast in the back parking lot in between the parked cars of the people that worked at the nail salon, chiropractor, and gun shop that were also in the mall.  Good training.

Then later, one of the guys I worked with bought it from the owners and moved it to the Collonnade (sp?) at the 459 / 280 intersection.  But by then I was long gone.

This would be fun.  You give me a date, and I will make accomodations. Maybe "Flyrod flip to small pool" contest?  Yall give me a date, and it is done.  Soon I hope!  We are slow, and need visitors, and business. There is plenty of room inside.  It would be a good time to discuss some mechanical topics as well.   I love Bream fishing.

Hate to shift gears on this, and I know I will bring the ire of the purists down on me. But does anyone know of a light weight automatic fly reel being made these days? When I mention this to most folks, they look at me like I have 3 eyes. I would love to get into fly fishing more, just hate the manual reels. Guess it depends on what you grew up with.

Well, I thought I had googled this a few months ago and couldn't find what I was looking for. Now, I have found one for 215 Euros, (carbon graphite). Little too rich for my pocketbook.

look at the pflueger and martin reels. They are in the $30 range and work OK. Some better than others.

Thank you ST. Seems like all of them are close to 2 lbs. apiece. Really would like a lighter reel.

Gotcha. I was thinking you were talking about line weight. Like #3 or 4 rods ... The pflueger 1195 is 9 oz.
