I actuallty agree with Hobbie Boy. Next, he will be posting that all was great since we had Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson abd Carter as Presidents during this period.

One day I was driving along and saw an open field that was mowed, and I thought about how odd it was that it wasn't being used for any kind of pick up game by kids in the area. I guess in the age of organized teams and play dates, kids just don't do that kind of thing anymore. Our parents weren't interested in establishing or elevating our self esteem. If an adult said you did something wrong, then you did something wrong. And if you did something wrong and the adult got to your parents before you told on yourself, you got it double. If you got in trouble in school, your parents didn't complain to the principle or the board of education; you were in trouble at school AND at home. And a fresh mouth would get you a slap, or a bar of soap shoved into your mouth (my mother actually did this). And your mother made good on "Wait until I get you out of here" (said through gritted teeth, usually in church). And if she said "Wait until your Father gets home", you were worried. It wasn't going to be pretty. And I like Leno's quote. That our pledge says "under God" is the least of our problems.

Streetlights? I don't recall any streetlights.

So funny you said that ... as a kid we had pick up games all the time in empty fields.  We did not have enough kids for 9 on each side, so we used to have invisible runners so we could go back and bat again.   But the invisible runners could only advance as many bases as the hitter got.   We still had little league, but we could not get enough so had the pick up games all the time ... since there were no video games to play.

makes me wonder what memories my son will share in another 30 years and how.   Who would have thought 40-45 years ago I would be sharing this on a computer over the internet with total strangers.  :)

And weirder still, is that when you communicate enough with "strangers", it actually feels like you know them. One of the things that I think kids these days miss is the need for imagination. Like your invisible runners -- you had to come up with a solution to a problem. You didn't need an adult to tell you how to do it, you just figured it out.

Hound, I remember pick up football games in the snow in a neighbor's yard that was perfectly flat and rectangular and we would play until we froze to death or they chased us off because of the noise. We played pick up basketball at the local playground (still have the scar in my elbow where I knocked one of my friend's teeth out going for a ball....and he was on my team). I rode my bike everywhere, all over town, to friends houses, to movies, to go visit girls, etc. We spent our entire summer sleeping in a cabin we built in the woods. We played bb gun battles (for those with ten pump they were only allowed to pump it 3 times) and no one lost an eye although we did lose a couple of pairs of glasses. When I wanted to play organized sports my parents said that's fine but how are you going to get to practice?.....I'll ride my bike or walk. They never, ever went to a practice and would have recoiled at the very thought. They attended most, but not all my games which was OK because lots of other parents didn't make every game. If you didn't win, place or show you got nothing but a life lesson in how to lose and realize that life goes on. You actually had to make the team and win a starting spot. I wrestled in high school in Pennsylvania (where wrestling is a big sport). We practiced every day, including Thanksgiving and Christmas because so did everyone else. Its just a different world today and not in a good way. My hope is some of this is still happening in small towns but somehow I doubt it. Reading this makes me wonder if we are getting old and crotchety? :-)

They say that a sign of getting old is complaining about the "youth" of today. LOL We won't even talk about their "music"....

I do - used to shoot them out with my $0.10 sling shot from the five and dime.
