I'm wondering what everyone here is thinking about the Herman Cain controversy and the Rick Perry speech (the one where he appears drunk, but he claims not).
If the Herman Cain controversy is true, does it matter? If he is a jerk around women, does that say anything about his ability to be President?
Do you think he would fare better if he just came clean about the facts? Can he still trusted if he parses words about it? Is he just making it worse?
And what about Rick Perry's speech? Do you think he was drunk or on pain medication? Do you think his campaign has anything to do with the Cain controversy? And if it is, does it say anything about Rick Perry? If one of his minions did it without his knowledge, is he still responsible?

Surprisingly, it really doesn't. The only thing that would affect me was if I knew he was pressuring employees for sex or inappropriately touching a woman against her wishes, if she had specifically told him not to touch her.
I worked in environments where men were the majority for years. A lot of bantering goes on, most of it just kidding around. I've known a couple of instances where women filed sexual harassment charges against a man that they either didn't like, or tried to use it to further their own agenda.

Is "harrassment" another one of those things where the definition is in the eyes of the beholder? If a man propositions a woman, she rejects the proposition, and he never mentions it again is that harrassment? Is there an accepted definition for harrassment? I guess it might depend on the circumstances....if it were a supervisor asking it of one of his supervised employees, there certainly could be the element of perceived pressure to do what the supervisor wants or face recriminations on the job - but if it is a casual encounter where there is no work relationship how many times would he have to ask before it becomes harrassment?
And the really thorny part of this is that he usually does it in private, which means it becomes a she said he said, who to believe issue. I'm just glad I don't work for a female or supervise a female...makes life much simpler.
Hound, did you perceive a change in attitudes and behavior in the military/defense workplace over your years as a Civil Servant? Seems to me things have changed quite a bit, especially as women have proven that they belong as peers with the men rather than underling secretaries and typists. Curious what you might have perceived from the woman's point of view.

I keep holding out for Gingrich to gain some momentum.
Cain is down to earth, makes sense, has good business experience, but pulls too many Palins and now Clintons. If Democrat (57 states, and Jennifer Flowers) he would be ok, but the press and talking heads will remind Republicans how much they are supposed to support family values.
Perry is a shooting star evangelist, complete with proud humility and humble arrogance. He is probably a good smoother politician, which is a reason not to trust him.
And Mitt Romney with his John Kerry flip flops. My picture of him is a finger in the air to see which way the conservative wind is blowing. He does not know on his own because he is not one.
Folks the choices are not good, but much MUCH better than the alternative.

As for the Cain imbroglio, it really doesn't change my mind about him in the least. My concern with him stems primarily from his lack of specificity on foreign affairs. Its not so much that I think he is right or wrong about anything but seems ill-prepared. I know this election is going to primarily be about jobs and the economy but most Presidencies ride on issues that no one expected to occur.
As for who leaked this, I have no idea but I continue to suspect someone from the left and not the Perry camp. But if one of the GOP campaigns did leak this then they will drop several notches in my estimation. This is exactly the kind of political nonsense that sickens most Americans.
Don't know anything about Perry's speech and I don't care. Just like I don't care if Barry is the Marlboro man.....I oppose him because of his European style socialism as we are seeing how that is working out. And that's in countries that haven't had to pay for their own national security for the last 50 years. If I don't vote for Perry in the primaries it will be because of what he believes, says and does and how confident I am that he can defeat Oblamer next November.

So, maybe it is time to put someone in the Whitehouse who will take a sharp knife to Foreign Policies too long in place. Something radical, like send a massive Invoice to Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, Japan, etc for the defense of their borders?? Or, reduce our contribution to the U.N. to match their ability to accomplish something worthwhile?
Know what I mean, run Foreign Policy like a profit center where the return at least matches the investment. Otherwise, shut er' down and move on.
No? Yep, I know, the World Order might not like us any more.

I think it did change over a period of time. Part of it was all the training that everyone had -- I think it made people more careful. And as a supervisor you really had to worry about the "hostile environment" because you either "knew or should have known" that it was going on.
Early in my career, I think things were a lot looser. I worked for the Army then, and the office parties were a bit wilder, with more drinking and carrying on. Later, with the advent of prayer groups and a less tolerant military, things got much more restrained. People got very cautious.
I've had some strange situations over the years too. One involved a female employee who insisted on posting a "pin up" type picture of her son. Several of the males in the office complained about it and I had to ask her to take it down. Another involved a friend of mine, who was told by her boss that she might want to glam it up, and shorten her skirts, so she didn't get "overlooked" while attending the Paris Air Show. This was the same boss who a few years earlier told me that I didn't "get it" because I wasn't the bread winner in a family. (This guy was a total jerk, not only to the women but to men too. I could write a book about him. )
