This isn't limited to Lake Martin, but I know a lot of people that read this forum have dogs. Just read an article that said that there have been numerous FDA reports that chicken jerky strips are linked to mysterious illness in dogs, which in some cases have been fatal. The jerky treats are being made in China. The FDA has not been able to identify specifically which ingredients are causing the problems. I just checked the bag of jerky treats I have on hand and sure enough, in small print it says "made in China". Those of you that recall the pet food scare of a few years ago will remember that the Chinese have a habit of adding strange ingredients to pet food or ingredients in pet food produced there. Don't assume just because you buy a national brand or a product labeled "high quality" that there isn't anything from China in there.

Good catch Hound, I agree, and we also check for country of origin for our daughter's treats. :-) If it is from China - no sale, there are enough products that we have very few options...

i would recommend you take a look at the Whole Dog Journal for references on most kinds of food for your dogs. These folks actuall go inspect the plants to make sure what you get.

i think i saw the jerky treats in a past issue. i'll check since my wife saves the journals each month. BTW the subscription is inexpensive and they have a 2 for 1 special going right now for the holidays.

Here's the online version. infor might be there.

as a follow up to that why don't you give your dog a nice big raw meaty beef bone to chew on? No worries about China there. Ours gets one almost every day and he loves them.

We had a hard time finding them but the really nice butcher at the AC Winn Dixie now stocks them for us. They come about 6-8 inches long and we get the butcher to cut them in 3 pieces.

We keep them in the freezer, pull one out and give it to the dog frozen. He loves it!

Caution!... Don't cook the bone!!!!! Cooked bones can splinter become dangerous to dogs!!!

Aside from never having to clean your dog's teeth here's some nutritional reasons to do it too....

I gave my girl a 'meatcicle' yesterday.  It was a pack of old beef soup bones from a tainted cow and subject to years of freezer burn.  Unwrapped them, rinsed them, and threw them out.  Old girl ate for hours.  At one point she was laying on her side chewing on that thing.  Never seen a dog do that before.

You get meaty bones from the WD in AC? Ever time I've asked there, I've been told they don't have them. Usually go to Catherine's. When I give my dogs meaty bones. Talu, my Coonhound usually goes around and scarfs them up. I even found one under my pillow in the bed one time.

Bride just returned from grocery store with 4 bags of treats for the dogs, dental sticks, etc., all contained some sort of chicken jerky, with 3 of the 4 made in china. Literally took one out of the jaws of the big boy after reading your post.

Went to WD in AC today and got bones!! Thank you for the tip. They were so huge that Feb to the saw to them so I have enough for a while. Tell Dudley I didn't wipe out their supply, so he should still be in good shape. Happy Thanksgiving!!

The butcher will cut them up however you want. Of course at $875.99 per pound he should :-)

I'll bet your doggies are hapy tonight!

They were very happy. I didn't know the store would cut them, although Feb had no problem. Now the bones will kick around the house for several weeks, with one of the dogs occasionally picking one up and giving it a chew. I'm no expert, but it appears that a good bone retains it's flavor for a while.
