Folks, I'm retiring from civil service this month and moving back to Alabama. Hope to start on my Lake Martin cabin this summer. Meanwhile I'll need internet service at my farm on the outskirts of Auburn. Cable and DSL are not available. Do any of you know of any reasonably priced options?

If serviced by AT&T ask them what it would cost to put in frame relay. the upfront cost will be steep, but the mothly cost will be around $100, but very fast. The only other option would be satellite, which is also costly, but pretty slow by todays standards.

Depending on your data needs, you may want to check into Verizon's data plans - they have "mobile hotspot" devices/phones that you can connect to either through USB or WIFI. The advantage here is internet access while you are "in transit", even while on the move....

good thought ... AT&T has the same. I use my iphone that way with my WiFi only ipad and it works good. A bit slow ... it is normally 1mbps which some DSL is less, but others is 1.5 to 6.0

lastly, keeping with the same thought ... if 4G LTE is available through either carrier ... this will be your fastest and cheapest option ... although limited on amount of data. You will see speeds at cable modem speed or faster.

My wife works for AT&T and I have seen a demo and it is lightening fast.

This is probably something similar to what is described above. I have a simple Blackberry with verizon service. I purchase a download called Tether-Berry. You can load it to one Blackberry and to as many laptops as desired. Hook the two together with a USB cord, start Tether on Blackberry and laptop, and, if you have decent phone service in the area, you will have decent internet connection.

I use AT&T "Mi-Fi" which allows me to access the internet anywhere AT&T has wireless phone service. Costs about $60 a month.
