I have read this forum for a few years now and always feel informed and enlightened to say the least! I always enjoy reading the posts and would like to ask a few questions and see what kind of feedback I can get from the forum. I really hope I am not crossing the line due to the fact we have not opened or even ready to open our business. I would just love to hear from the people that live on Lake Martin full or part time and get some opinions. My husband and I are planning on opening a retail garden center and farmers market in the spring on 229 where a nursery was located at one time. What is your initial thought of this? This is not new to my husband (has done this for 30 years, so he knows what he is getting into) Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I welcome every business to the Lake area, especially one that will be close to where we live. 1. Join the forum advertisers. 2. Have convenient hours for those that work. 3. Be knowledgable in the products you sell and share that knowledge with your customers and the people on the forum. There are many more, we will look for your opening.

Congratulations!  It is always great to have a new business in our local.  Especially one that helps people with black thumbs when it comes to gardening.

One suggestion I have is maybe open later in the morning and stay open later in the evening.  So many people work and cannot make it to the lake by 5pm.

Good luck

It will be worth the wait! I just want yall to give me your ideas as you think of them. Not saying we can do everything that is put out there to us but we plan on trying to bring everything we can that the good people of Lake Martin are looking for. Hold on a little longer- good things are sure to be around the corner!

I would bet that there are quite a few folks who would love it if you could offer some off-season upkeep on the plants that you have sold.

Since this would obviously be a lot of work above and beyond what you're already looking at, I would think about contracting with someone who would do the actual work, either a yard maintainence company that already exists, or hire a few people on a pay-as-the-work-comes-in basis.

When people are thinking about landscaping, and using some expensive plants to do it, they might be won over by hearing "and for just a few dollars per month, we'll make sure they last through the off-season, when you're not there to take care of them yourself." (Of course, this only applies to part-time residents, though you could make the same offer to the lazier segment of full-timers. :-) )

We are hoping to offer a seasonal color program that would include bed preparation, installation, and maintenance. On the tsuggestion -once shrubs are planted and established they will maintain themselves during the off season. My dear husband has a wealth of knowledge and over 25 years of landscaping design and installation experience that he is very excited to be bringing to Lake Martin.
We have gotten some great feedback and would love to continue getting ideas! John has owned and ran his own business for over 25 years but it is time he slows down a little bit and really enjoys what he is doing. We are so excited to be offering great plants and knowledge (help)  to the area. I will let you know as we progress about opening specifics!
Keep the ideas and suggestions coming please.

lakngulf- I can appreciate where your coming from ! John learned a LONG time ago that if I was t otake care of the yard and nice landscaping he did at our home, that he should make me get out there and sweat and work to help. LOL
I seemed to care alot more about the upkeep if I had put my hard work into it!

I worked at the nursery that was there until it closed. We had some wonderful regular clients that I think would gladly return and welcome you to the area. You'll have to fight the normal scepticism, of the locals, that any business here can survive and I'll tell you the winters are tough, but there are plenty of us that will welcome the addition of your business. Best of Luck and I for one will support you.
