What do you recommend for a car GPS?

Iphone or Droid. Maps are always updated and they work as good as any. I also have a tom tom with lifetime map updates that is decent but the upper end Garman Nuvi's are probably the best for all purpose navigation. A note for all GPS units....maps have yet to completely catch up with many rural areas including the Lake Martin area, but they will get you close.

The tomtom takes me underwater to get to my house, and then turns in circles.

I have had very good luck with Garmin portable units - got the first in 1996, and an updated version in 2004.

Well, it gets you close, lol. In my neighborhood all GPS units have problems....they still think Colley Camp road connects into our neighborhood and it doesn't. I've even sent in info to update the maps, but it never seems to happen completely.

I have a Garmin, but I only turn it on when I am out of cell range and therefore google maps on my iphone is useless.  I find that using a combo of google maps, the garmin, and that physical map of the lake that C stores sell is the way to go.  Below please see an article I wrote for Lake Mag, that might be helpful if you are scouting homes by boat.

I regularly use my iPhone and the app named GPS Drive by Motion-X. Takes me right to our place in the Coosa 20 area. Generally speaking the GPS apps for cell phones tend to use power like crazy so a car charger is recommended. They upgrade this app constantly and it gets better and better and better. It got to the point a year or two ago that I don't even think about getting a separate GPS device anymore. I've used GPS Drive all up and down the east coast as far as NYC. Excellent. I've found AT&T service to be quite spotty in our part of the Lake but a Verizon iPhone should handle that problem, based on my experience with some Verizon devices. The GPS uses your cell data connection to download map data when you move into an area you haven't been before, so be sure to pull down your map data in an area of good coverage. With AT&T, that means before you get much north of Wetumpka. N of Wetumpka cell data and voice for AT&T is very intermittent. No problems with the GPS part though.

My DROID has a couple of really good GPS Apps, but I have had a Garmin for years and as long as I keep it updated I never have any problem with it.

No problem with auto GPSs. My wife has one and every now and then she used to let me borrow it. i'm just making the point that the iPhone Motion X app has become so good (and i'm sure other GPS apps have, for Androids also) that for over a year now, maybe two, it's never entered my mind that i ought to borrow or buy a dedicated GPS for my car. i would say if you already have a smartphone and don't own a dedicated GPS unit, i can't really think of a compelling functional reason you'd want to go out and buy a separate GPS device for your car rather than a $1.99 application and a $10/year voice direction service to go with it for your iPhone. One device does it all and much more besides. One device, one set of wires to charge it, one plug for juice, and you're good to go. in fairness, i guess for some folks the larger screen on a dedicated GPS device might make a difference. But i'm 63, have worn high-prescription specs for years (bifocals for well over a decade), and have no problem reading and interpreting the iPhone GPS display.
