I started to reply but thought better of it and decided not to go down that slippery slope.

There is no right answer.  No matter what you say somebody is going to get pi$$ed.

Given the emotions that it seems to generate, why even go there? Yes, it is part of our history; but so was hanging and very few people want to see nooses in trees. I keep wondering why some people are so intent to keep this going.

That was cool show with Boss Hog in his white suit and footlong cigar. While it displayed the rebel flag, I don't recall it being a racist show. However, I sense that many of the major corporations with their logos on the cars do not want to follow behind the rebel flag and have pressured France. Since NASCAR has such tight control, I am surprised that this wasn't discussed and approved by NASCAR before they contracted for the General. The PR now is a nightmare for NASCAR. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Its all a matter of perspective.  Growing up in New Jersey I wouldn't expect you to understand.  And that's not a slam on you by any means.

It's true I didn't grow up here, but I'll bet a lot of people who did would agree with me. It isn't like the Confederacy took place during the lifetime of anyone still living. No old soldiers who wore the grey uniform hobbling around who need to be honored. I would think that the South and Southerners would like to put that particular past to rest. It's not like slavery and racial intolerance are something to be proud of, like say, Southern hospitality or manners or food or being friendly. Why not find a symbol that celebrates something positive about the South and hang it out for all to see?

Pure Economics. Don't do anything that might hurt the bottom line. And, I can understand that from a sponsor/owners point of view. So be it.
However, I have not heard "Gentlemen, start you engines" coming out of the mouth of a RAP Singer either. Same idea.
The Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol of MY heritage and I love it. Always will, regardless of efforts to P.C. it out of existence. It is still there.

No, you do not understand. Southerners are not allowed to forget slavery. We are constantly reminded by media of our faults. Documentaries. Movies. Books. And, there are no injured slaves walking around today either. Although descendents are eager to cash in if possible.
Heritage is precious to me. I am Scots, then South. Both have suffered under oppressive governments, and still are. But they have survived, so far. I still love that stars and bars and I honor my tartan plaid. Always will, despite the pressure from the Politically Correct to hide it/deny it.
Go away. Make a cake. But, don't tell me to forget my heritage. I am much too proud of it.

Have you lost your mind?  The Confederate flag is your HERITAGE?  I really feel sorry for you.

And telling me to go bake a cake?  You obviously have your head stuck where the sun don't shine.  Maybe you could stick your confederate flag and your tartans up there too.

You don't understand, and until you get off that high horse you never will.

Its not the flag, (pointed slur deleted), its what it stands for.

And NO, it does NOT stand for what the PC weasels would like everyone to believe.

I'm very proud of the Stars and Bars and always will. Did you even read the article, the war was not about slavery until Lincoln needed more to add to his army to help in the defeat of the southern brotherhood states. My forefathers were from the north and fought for the north and I also had/have relatives in the south which is where I feel I belong. It always amazes me that people start bringing up nooses and such when talking about a Flag. I fly my Stars and Bars along with my Union Flag when appropriate. It's all about heritage, everyone wants to have theirs but take away yours if they don't like it. All are important and should not be surpressed from anybody. Many of the slaves were brought here unwillingly by white slave traders but many were sold by their own tribes cheifs and elders but that is fact that most Afro-Americans don't know or don't want anyone else to know. Wrong is wrong but history cannot be changed. I believe and many may not like what I'm going to say but with the slaves ancestors being brought here however it was they got here now live in the greatest country in the world. most slaves were treated well and many white people were share croppers and had it just as bad. Not saying it was fair or right but true. I think We the people of this great country need to move on but not at the expense of leaving out the past and what it stood for or against.

BB, you are correct. It is amazing how little people understand the Civil War in the context of the times in which it occurred. While it is true slavery was a major issue to many in the North, and of course to the large plantation owners (the rich guys in the South)it mattered a lot as well. But this is an overall very small percentage. The vast majority in the South were dirt poor subsistence farmers. It was not until after the Civil War that people began to think of themselves as Americans first. Before that, people thought of themselves as first and foremost, citizens of their State, and secondly, citizens of U.S. of America. Revisionist history ignores this fact. The average Southern soldier did not fight to preserve slavery. Nor did they care about ending slavery, really, as it had almost nothing to do with their lives. When the call to arms to protect their STATE was issued, they enlisted. It was a matter of honor. It was that simple. And for nearly 5 years the bloodiest war ever fought by Americans followed. It is incredibly disrespectful to suggest that the heritage of the Southern soldier, including the flag, should be intentionally forgotten and stricken from our history.

Having grown up in the north I can tell you I have no issue with the confederate flag. Yes, the civil war ultimately degenerated into a battle over slavery. But the central issue was one of federalism and state's rights. Did the federal government have the right to force states to do certain things? Lincoln wisely made this an issue of slavery because he was losing support in the north and felt that the desire for abolition would carry the day and it did. I know a bunch of people that fly the confederate flag and don't have a racist bone in their body. For them it is all about federalism and state's rights. But if NASCAR wants to ban the confederate flag they can have at it. I'm not a fan and I can tell you that it doesn't keep me away and banning it will not get me there. Just not interested. Seems their calculation is that more will come with the flag gone than will stop coming because it is banned. Time will tell........

4691's post was powerful.  Thanx for the thoughts.  I love History!  Please don't let this thread become mean, or disrespctfull.  Such great information and thoughts.  WOW.  I need to stay off of the Off-Topic forum.  Now I am in trouble again.  Personally, I liked the show!  And, really......  It should have had a Cathouse Logo on the hood.  Just sayin'.  Recokon what NASCAR would say then.  OMG.

CAT, I notice that you post these things and ask how people think about it.... without ever saying what YOU think about it.  So, what do YOU think about it?
