Subject:   do I want pontoons filled with anything?

We are narrowing down the brand of boat we want to buy, and the main difference is coming down to the pontoons being filled with Styrofoam NOT spray foam that becomes waterlogged or air. I am being told if I get a leak the one not filled with anything will sink, where the one with Styrofoam will float. Share your wisdom.

My .02 is pressurize with air.  That way, you know if you even have a leak.  Otherwise, how would you know if they are simply aluminum bladders filled with foam.  Check the air pressure as part of your normal maintainance and record.  I am not a Pontoon owner, but that is my thoughts.  Steve

Nothing else. If you ever get a leak ( which isn't all that uncommon) it is by far the easiest to get fixed.

Chances are that you are concerned about hitting something while you are under way, which means most likely that the hole will be on the bottom of the pontoon.  If that is the case, the pontoon will not take on water above the perforation.  The best comparison I can give you would be an empty paper cup with a hole in it half way up.  Turn it upside down in a pan of water and it will fill with water up to the hole, but not above.  I would theorize that the same would be true with a pontoon.  So, if you suspect a breached pontoon, slowly motor to a safe place and check it out.  You aren't going to completely sink even if one pontoon is filled with water.

I agree with the concept of slight overpressure as well.  if you see bubbles coming from a pontoon it has a leak.  Just make sure you don't get too much air in it and split a weld!

then if you spring a leak you have two choices:
1. you can vent it into your engine and haulass to shore.
2. you can just breath it and laugh yourass off.

I own After Hours Truck Repair in Red Hill, AL., I repair approx. 150 pontoons a year (alum. welding) In the last 5 years I have had only two that needed repairs to the bottom of the pontoons. The majority of repairs have been on boats that stay in the water year round, these repairs being to the splash fins or where the flanges weld to the tube at the stern. This being said, pontoons that have flotation material inside them are harder to repair because the material is flammable and it blows the weld out. If you are worried about  your boat striking an object and sinking it would have to be one very large hole, because the majority of your pontoons now in production are made of two or three seperate cells. In addition to this the only proper way to repair a pontoon is to weld it, the epoxy repair kits that are on the market seem like a good idea, the problem is the aluminum expands and contracts more than the epoxy will allow. So if I was in the market for buying a new pontoon boat it would definatly be filler free!

He knows his stuff; he fixed my old pontoon when it had a leak. If you ever need a pontoon leak repaired, or any type of welding done (aluminum or steel), he's the man.
