Went over the dam twice today.  Water was pouring out!  Why???

The lake is filling too fast after the storms that rolled through. It's already 6+ inches over the rule and will probably peak higher before they have a chance to get it back to the specified level.

Too fast?  Seems to me they should be able to estimate the volume from upstream and take advantage of the water while it is available. FEMA forced FLOOD INSURANCE on us....I want the lake FULL.

Unfortunately that's not how it works; they will get the level back to the rule curve as soon as it's practical by passing a lot of water through the dam.....that rain would have probably filled us up if all gates were closed. The good news is the rule is increasing by a few inches every day and that will probably keep the lake from dropping much if any from current levels and it should continue to rise slowly later in the week.

Hope they do better than last year...had a little surplus early (around this time) they let too much out and we never recouped.

No gates are open they are just generating at 10-10.

Last summer was about average from what I've seen over the years we've been here..... Maybe slightly below average once we got into mid August because of the lack of summer rain.  After 2007, I'm thrilled with anything above 487 from June through August and I look forward to having 483 as a winter pool. From a historical basis, the lake is usually held about 6-8 inches below the rule when water is plentiful, which means we can expect (under the new plan that should be adopted) about 489+ in early summer and 482+ in the winter when rainfall is normal. It's not uncommon to see it drop to somewhere around 487 in August. Other than 2007, I think the "powers that be" have done a better job for the last 5 years than than they did for the predeceasing 5 years. I would love to see a constant level year around, but that will never happen; I'm just grateful for those that have worked hard to make positive changes in Lake Martin for our recreational purposes. Once we get the new licensing agreement, what we've seen for the last two years is likely to be what I will experience for the rest of my life....I can accept that and will enjoy every minute of my time on "The Lake".

I am against raising the winter pool to 483, I don't see the need for this changs. If you look at the last five years, only once, 2007, has the lake failed to reach full pool on time. With the drought that year I find it unlikely we would have reached full pool and if we had it would not have lasted long. That seems to indicate that  the higher winter pool is not necessary for a full pool at the beginning of the season. I designed my dock with  a 480 winter pool in mind to allow maintenance. A higher winter pool does not allow this. We all knew the guidelines when we bought our property. I say leave it alone.

I was OK with the current rule, but a higher rule makes more sense from a macro economic sense; from my experience, most like it better. I'll make a wager the rule will go up even more on the next licensing agreement, but this is a good compromise for now.

There will always be those that look for the bad in any situation....that premise has already been exhibited from both sides in this thread. As with any compromise, it's probably a good one if both sides think they got hosed.

I disagree and believe it should be raised to 485. I think the local economy is far more important than your personal dock maintenance situation (this is not intended as a disrespetful comment toward you). HOBO's can provide a pretty solid case for raising the Winter level minimum to 485. I believe LMRA agrees. I know Lake Watch agrees with the 483 number at a minimum. There are many wasted lake days for the enjoyment of all. Keeping the Lake up for more days will increase of dollars spent in the Lake area. I do not believe there has been a legitimate or overwhelming argument to do otherwise.

If there is hard data that shows lake usage would increase with a higher winter water level then I would agree with you. My personal opinion is that most people do not use the lake in the winter because of the colder temperatures.

Good point.  Come September kids are back in school and attention turns to high school and college football, and by the time those are done it is too cold for most to be on the water. For us the water level nether mitigates for or against spending much time at the lake in the off-season.  Now if I can just finish that addition......:>)

Like noses, we all have an opinion.  So.here is my opinion and suggestion as to water level.  I personally enjoy when all the kids get off their PWC's and go back to school.  This lake is very beautiful in the fall and early winter days in the 70's.  As to the water level...has anyone suggested for consideration a lowering of the lake to 480-481 ft every 5 years or so.  Maybe even 10 years.  That would give property owners time to schedule and plan their dock repairs.  The other years it could go down to 485-486 ft.  The best of both worlds...just a thought....got to get my boat serviced soon..,.water is in the slough !!!

I for one would love to see the lake full pool ALL the time, or at least for a more extended time. I think economically it just makes sense for the area. The reason people don't go to the lake after school starts is not because it's football season, etc. (in my opinion), it's because they know the lake level drops. By the way, why do they drop the level? I've heard everything from flooding to allowing people to work on their piers, but people have piers (and work on them) on lakes that are at a constant level all the time. Just curious...always wondered what the rationale was.

If a higher level is going to bring people to the lake in the winter where was the giant influx this winter with the level being kept at 483. I know I have not seen any more boats on the lake this winter as compared to years past. I like seeing the lake full also but taking it down for a couple of months when the water temp is in the 60's and the air is colder sometimes is not keeping people away. Maybe it does not need to be drawn down for as long as it is and a compromise of only going down to 480 every few years is worthy of consideration.

No great influx, but several times this winter we saw more than your normal speedster fisherman.  Pontoons, deck boats even a jet ski or two.  If I had one in the water I would have joined them.   Now, I have no idea how many more would be around if the water stayed higher.  As far as I know, this was the first year for it to stay at 483.

We had some great weekends over the last few months.

I go out more when the water is higher in the winter. I also spend more time at the lake when the water is up, and I know others that do the same.....It's not just a matter of going out on the water. The view in many places is much better and more enjoyable when the water is high.

Too late, George.  On three ocassions this winter I took off the boots, put on my Crocs and waded out into the water to do some pier work.

You did not have trouble with dock shrinkage when you were working?

Why do they bring the water down you ask?  Good question.  Hey, maybe they could explain it to all of us.  Then maybe they could explain to FEMA so that we don't need "FLOOD INSURANCE" at least for half the year.  Be willing to give 1/2 premium from 'flood insurance" to APCO if they could convince FEMA that they CONTROL the lake.

Well, I guess that was George that started this

didn't ask, but the lake is lowered because of winter rains and a fairly remote (but real) possibility of major damage if the lake was kept completely full all year. About 99% of the lots on Lake Martin can get a survey and remove the flood insurance requirement. I know it's a pain in the butt (and it shouldn't be that way), but life is too short to sweat the small $hit. If you are too low to get it removed, you should want it and pay for it.

Does anyone have any underwater posthole diggers I can borrow?

I am not taking sides on this topic. But reading through this thread I had thought. Seems like I remember someone stating that the raising and lowering of the lake keeps the water cleaner. And clearer. Something about letting less vegetation and algae build up at the water line. Wondering if this true?
