Subject:   Lake Martin - BASS Trail Update
Date:   3/14/2012 11:34:01 AM (updated 3/14/2012 11:36:22 AM)

Spoke to the powers that be this morning (about an hour phone call) and long story short: - It is not that Lake Martin was not considered, to the best of their knowledge nobody from the City nor Tourism or economic Development Board pursued the opportunity. She did state in all fairness these individuals may not have been made fully aware of the BASS Trail as the Birmingham Convention and Tourism Chamber identified potential targeted lakes for the Trail, based on revenue generated through the sale of fishing licenses. Also the final lakes were selected by BASS. With the above said, she did state she was more than willing and would like very much to make a trip to Alex City and meet with local community leaders to (provided me with her cell phone number, as very rarely in the office): - Spend a day on the lake, meet with community leaders - Review Infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants, campgrounds, boat ramp access, etc. - entertainment and other venues - Lake quality of fishing - Consider Martin for inclusion on the Trail For example Lake Mitchell requested to be on the Trail, however did not have the infrastructure. The cost to be listed on the BASS Trail is $5,000 annually and what the BASS Trail is, is more or less a source of information (ramps, hotels, maps, etc) for recreational fishermen and women to use to help them facilitate there fishing trip to the area. Sort of like the Robert Trent Jones golf courses, for recreational golfers. Then to host a BASS Open event, the cost is $30,000 and to be a Founding Sponsor of the BASS trails the cost is $25,000 and currently they are limiting the Founders Circle to 5, which includes a Board seat on the BASS Trail. Also appears the BASS Trail and the BASS corporation have formed a quasi relationship to support one another to drive tourism since BASS recently relocated back to Alabama. Found the above information to be rather interesting. Sounds like there is still an opportunity to have Martin listed on the Trail, but someone within Alex City needs to wake up and pursue this tourism / economic opportunity. Thoughts or comments ???

Does the monies come from Local business sponsors, or from the county/city itself?  Is the 'Someone" an elected official or a citizen as far as a contact for them?

From my conversation the local city or economic development board funds the $5,000. Now if you would like to be a Founding Member / Sponsor and have a Board Seat for $25,000 you can have such - LOL. With regards to whom I spoke with I do not want the person to get inundated with phone calls (not an elected official), but just as an FYI I have called the appropriate parties within Alex City to inquirer of their knowledge with regards to the Alabama BASS Trail and the fact Lake Martin is not listed on said Trail. More to come later after I speak with the appropriate local officials.

Just off the phone with Mayor Young and since I left the message and email yesterday she has contacted the Chamber and the Alex City Recreation Department and nobody knew anything about the Alabama BASS Trail. Also she has contacted Alabama Tourism Department in Montgomery and now has the name and cell phone number of the person in charge of the Alabama BASS Trail, I provided to her. As I stated in my previous post this indvidual from the Alabama BASS Trail was more than willing to travel to Alex City to meet with local officials, tour the lake and surrounding infrastructure, etc. Mayor Young stated she would follow up with my contact, the Department of Tourism and others to try to schedule a meeting in Alex City to have Lake Martin considered for the BASS Trail. Furthermore, she stated she would keep me in the loop as any progress is made. So as I receive any updates I will post them to the forum. Just an FYI, the Alabama BASS Trail does not guarantee any tournaments, what it does is their website lists the current fishing conditions, hotel accommodation (make reservations online), restaurants, and a map of the lake with fish habitats, ramps, marinas, along with other local information. The Alabama BASS Trail is more about recreational fishing than tournaments, but the Trail does have a quasi relationship with BASS which in the long-term could be beneficial to the local economy.
