Well, we had some furniture made by a person over in Wetumpka. He moved here 35 years ago from Missouri. He told us he still has people say to him; "You are not from around here are you?". My wife will never be considered from around here and after forty years of absence (I grew up in Dothan), I may probably never re-establish residence. Don't worry about it since the locals will accept your money. The first thing the locals will attempt to do is establish some type of family connection from the past with you. If you don't pass this test, then you are not from around here, and some of us wonder if it affects the price of goods and services. LOL For the most part, the locals are good "God Fearing" people and do tolerate most of us the best they can.

he lives way up n'oth in Coosa County.  We moved here a few years ago and we have never lived anywhere with more of a sense of community.  Most of the "lake people" are retired, and you wouldn't believe the education, background, experience, and talents of many of your neighbors.  Based on your prior posts, you live in an area (Hwy 34) that has the heaviest concentration of full timers of any area of the lake.  I'd heard of Alex City folks vs those backwaters folks (Dadeville), the Dadeville town folks vs the lake folks...forget it.  Be a joiner...Most everybody finds a church to their liking for worship.......and to find new friends.

I was talking with a friend recently, and he made a great observation.  Most of us moved here from some other place, we were all strangers, with no title, no baggage, no heritage,  and we had to accept each other as just we are.....ain't that great.

Being a "local" is more of a state of mind and willingness to adapt than anything else. Be neighborly, friendly, and helpful and the favor will be returned......works just about everywhere including here.

Well.. as a councilman recently put it during a meeting..." I look around this crowd and I don't see many folks here that are "Home Grown"
.
You just have to get over it and learn to love the good things that you describe. The locals that live on your support will always appreciate you but you probably won't fit in the big picture.  Find something that allows you to contribute to the community and let the chips fall where they may.

Welcome to the Lake. We moved here full time about two years ago and could not be happier. I have found the "local" folk to be GREAT.

From what I've seen, about 2 generations should do it for you.  The locals will be very nice to you, but you will still be a "lake person" to them, i.e, that you have money, and they will charge you accordingly.  They will likely tell you that "they could have lived out on the lake if they wanted to, but they didn't want to", etc, and explain ad nauseum.  Most likely if you never worked for Russell, or if your Daddy, Momma or cousin didn't work for Russell, you didn't go to one of the local high schools (or one of your kids isn't going there), and you don't go to their particular church, you will probably remain a "lake person", bless your heart.  But everyone is real nice.

It is always the same in every Small Town, America. Belive me (and as you know Hound) I have lived in a few of them. They include Junction City,KS, Eatontown,NJ, Leesville,LA, Daleville,Al, and a few others. They are communitties of nice people and are mostly family oriented both blood family and community family. We got to live here a long time (if we are blessed) so no offense intended to anyone. So lets leave this as everything is "real good".

What a condescending and patronizing post! With that kind of superior attitude, I doubt that two generations will be sufficient.

You and I know each other. I always considered you a rather nice person. I will say this to you, you need to go back to the political forum with your personal attacks. What is your problem these days? I have not known you to be this way in the past. No one attacked you personally.

Well, I don't know that I know any "Alabama rednecks" but since I've never wanted to be one, I guess I should thank you.  I certainly don't hope to ever be a "common Alabama redneck".

AU67 - I call it as I see it.  If that particular shoe fits you..... walk around in it a bit, why don't you?

Most folks around LM are simply people, just trying to get along in difficult times. "Lake People" as stereotyped above will be welcomed with open arms,,,, as long as you approach the ""Locals"" on a casual basis, without the need to impress them with your degrees, your wealth, your social status, your background, or your political position.
Otherwise, sell out and move to Palm Beach, where those traits are needed.
Learn from those "locals". Ask questions, and then shut your mouth, and listen to them. Just might learn something and have a blast with it.

Well said, your wealth or social status don`t mean squat to the average person around here. When you try to impress with what you have ,you don`t impress anyone.Chill out ,get to know some normal folks.

Your post painted this area with a really broad brush and in a stereotypical manner. I happen to not agree with your view and since I don't speak for anyone else on the forum, I guess my reply was personal. That's the great thing about this country...you can have your view and opinion and I can have mine. Let's pray we never lose that freedom.

I think there is a difference in a "local" and a "long timer".  I consider myself to be a "local" because this is my permanent home, has been since 1998.  That status does not really get me anything other than some experience:  Like I know where to scratch a prop during early spring  and late fall, I know how hard it is for local businesses to stick around and I learn to appreciate those that can, I know how far it is to get about anything so I learn to stock up at Sam's.  But I still like to get a few things at the corner store so maybe they can stay in business.  I've learned who can keep my boat running, fix my well, deliver rip rap, fill up my propane tank, etc.  Periodically, I walk out on my deck and marvel at how beautiful this lake is.  I do what I can to keep it that way, and do not appreciate those who care less.

Now "long timers' know all that and so much more.

The key is that there are some great locals and some great long timers, and there are some jerks from both groups, just like there are both kind of weekenders (ok there may be some debate there).  We all "own" the lake, and nobody owns the lake, but it is one fantastic place for us to enjoy.

Welcome home!  This is a small-town community of folks who love living at the lake.  Join your local Volunteer Fire Dept., the Chamber of Commerce (individual membership), a Church, Kiwanis, the Garden Club, the Yacht Club (not really Yachts), and lots more.  If you get involved in just one thing, you can contribute to your community and meet people who will draw you in to other organizations.  Who has time to work?

We retired to Lake Martin after 30+ years of Air Force service.  Affiliating with our church, St. John the Apostle Catholic church brought us into the community, in a big way.

I don't know if we are local or not after 12 years, but we are "home".

Thanks for all the input...didn't think that question would stir up a debate! Actually, we've met some really nice people so far. Hope to find a church home once we settle in. Unfortunately, there is some truth to the attitude that there are "lake" people and locals, but I think that attitude is few and far between. (well, other than the misconception that you have to be rich to live on the lake...FYI we're definitely not!!)
