I'm wondering what everyone else is thinking about the Sgt. Bales case (the Army guy who may have snapped and went out and killed civilian Afghanis.)  Do you think his wife was right in going on national television?  Do you think he is being set up?  Do you think there is more to the story than we are hearing?

This is an interesting comparison: A U.S. soldier, in an isolated war zone, killed Afghanistan civilians -- a tragic event -- however, it exposes an irony. There are quick international and national demands to try this soldier quickly and execute him, never mind his having possibly suffered a traumatic brain injury in combat, and definitely having post traumatic stress disorder syndrome related to being on his fourth active duty combat tour in the Middle East. Yet U.S. Army Major Hasan, who murdered people in Fort Hood while screaming Allah akbar, still hasn't stood trial, and they are still debating whether he was insane, even with the clear evidence regarding his premeditated motive and acquisition of weapons, etc. So, the United States has a soldier in a war zone who cracks, and people want him executed immediately. But another U.S. soldier, a Muslim psychiatrist, who was stateside in a nice safe office every day murders 13 and wounds 29 -- they stall his trial, and argue the 'poor lad' suffered post-traumatic stress syndrome, from listening to real soldiers who had actual battle experiences, and problems.

Interesting point.

One thing I read was that the Army is actually going to slow roll the Bales trial to let emotions calm down.  I think the only ones calling for his immediate execution are the Afghanis and they are not letting Army investigators have access to the "crime" scene.  I have actually wondered if he will ever really be court martialed.

On the other hand, with Huessian, I'd just as soon as they dropped the court martial and just send him to the firing squad.  I think that heads have probably rolled up and down the command line since so many people knew there was a problem but looked the other way.  They already know that he was communicating with a radical cleric in Yemen, so they have the motive,  On the other hand, if everyone knew there was a problem, yet no one did anything, there is a dereliction of duty, and probably grounds for a court martial of the leadership chain.

There was an interesting article in one of the papers by a retired Army psychiatrist saying that the tests that are done on soldiers to determine "fitness for duty" for deployment for mental health.  He believes it is woefully inadequate when it comes to determining who may snap.
