Comes up once a year, every year.

Private club ... they get to set the rules.  Last I knew they allowed women to get on the list ... but the list is very long and why should they make an exception and others that have been waiting be bumped.

Unless it is illegal ... I say they can do what they want ... when you don't like what someone does, don't support them.  I don't think Augusta will worry about that since having been to the tournament many times, there is no advertising allowed and they even use local women to make all the snadwiches they sell.  Even the beer is no name and onlt sold for 4 hours each day.

it is a private club, but also a large enough institution in the community that can cast it's shadow on the local economy.   Seems like sexual discrimination to me.  And i think you could argue that this has a negative economic influence on specific individuals in a community.   Membership in these country clubs has beneficial economic effects because they offer businessmen the opportunity to mingle, increase informal business contacts, and enhanced opportunities for forming new businesses.   Why would you want to systematically exclude females from that?

disclaimer is that I am a pretty staunch supporter of equal rights for women.

Having said that, I don't really care. It's a private club of about 300 members.  If they don't want women, they should not have to have women members. As I understand it, even with men, just because you can afford to belong there doesn't mean that you will be able to join.  It's much more about social status than it is money or golf.

It would be interesting to know how many other private clubs do not admit women members.  And it would also be interesting to know if there are any female clubs that don't admit men.

What makes it interesting this year is that IBM is one of the major sponsors of the tournament, and the CEO of IBM happens to be a woman.  Traditionally, Augusta has extended a membership to the CEO of IBM -- and if Augusta doesn't change the rules and offer her a membership, then how will SHE (and IBM) explain their support to the rest of their female employees.  IBM has refused to comment and their CEO is "traveling".

Don't know why it comes up every year.  It's just not that interesting.

I am thankful that, during Masters Week, they don't use the local sandwich ladies at Hooters or the Disco. As for women members, I absolutely agree. Augusta National is a private club, and if the members want to open membership to women, it is their decision, and as club members, their decision only. Either way, I will still go at every opportunity, for the tournament, the sandwiches, the beer, and the non locals at Hooters and the Disco.

I'd say this is the least thing women have to worry about right now.   It's discriminatory, yes.  I have a feeling in the next 10 years it will be a moot point.  As younger men, with professional career wives, start running the club, things will likely change.  In the meantime, women will just have to shake and bake someplace else.  Or start their own club.

Used to live in Round Rock TX.  Was a small redneck bar there called the Tap, which had a large cardboard sign in the window proclaiming men only.  Some of the local lefties took exception and tried to raise a stink about it.  Guess who put the rebellion down - wives of the guys who went there.  Their position - I know where my man is and he ain't chasing women.

Like you and Water Boy, I can cut and paste with the Right. An example...." was going to make a comment about GoofeyFishin but GoofeyFishin wouldn't know he had been unsulted since he can't copy and paste it."

But really, who cares?  I didn't want an ugly green jacket anyway....And I'd never find shoes to go with it.

No one can get in to Augusta ... man or women.  It is a small club, memberships stay with families, the list is so long of people wanting to get in that most will die before their name ever comes up.  So even if the club said they take women but they need to get on the list ... they will probably never make it anyway.   So what are the going to do, bump someone that has been waiting just to have a token women?   That is silly and unfair.

There are all sorts of clubs, womens clubs, christian clubs, NAACP, jewish clubs, etc.  And their should be.  There is nothing wrong with a male golf club, considering there is only one month a year they get to play the course anyway.

All members are owners of the club and since it is so successful, today they get paid, not the other way around.

This is not even worthy of further discussion.  The only reason it comes up it to stir the PC issue because it is a prestigious and successful club.   There are many more all male clubs, do you see them in the news?   Or all women clubs or any other club that is for a specific group?   It would not be PC to have an all white club, but there are plenty of black clubs, churches, schools, etc.

Hooters does not allow men to be servers.

Now that is funny and a good response that women should have.  :)

Way to go.

Excellent points.  If they didn't host the Masters, would anyone really even notice their policies?

It speaks very highly of those men when their wives publicly admit they can't trust their husbands around other women.
