With the gas prices getting higher and my salary going lower :)....thinking of getting a portable tank. Looking for any experiance with one that actually works. There is the Pump n Go model on Amazon for around $150.00, but the reviews on it look pretty bad. I would rather just pay the extra on water charge than have to fool with a pump that doesnt work.  The way my boat sits on the pier...ill need some sort of pump (the gravity method is not going to work).

If you have had luck with a model (or pump method) that works let me know. Looking for something small (under 20 gallons). Thanks.

Since he said gravity will not work he many not be able to siphon. If so buy that hose at Harbor Freight at half the price.
I have a sort of foot pump with a small gas nozzle that would work. Bought it from Amazon for about $20. It works well but is slow so I usually go for the jiggle hose already mentioned. Either way you still have to haul those heavy red gas jugs.

Here is a thread that might help you as this topic has been discussed in the past.

I use the same method Bama uses except I made mine. Used the nozzle that comes with the 5 gallon cans and some clear tubing from Home Depot and some PVC fittings. I've even got a shut off valve on mine. 5 gallons of gas weighs 30 pounds, I just hoist it on my shoulder. It's not that heavy for long. I have to carry mine way down hill too but it's not so bad and an excellent workout. Peace, TC

Used the 30 gal on wheels, and 6 ea 5 gallon cans. Our driveway ends in the water, and would pull truck down to match dock height and unload. The 30 gal had some sort of crank/siphon, pretty easy, used the shake hose on the 5's. I convinced myself that was the smart thing to do, save $.50/gallon buying my fuel on shore. I did that exactly 3 weekends. Even saving $30 each weekend wasn't worth the risk of a rolling explosion, as well as the time. Had to fill them up, drive them up, unload the containers to the dock, then watch closely as each was used to fill boat and jet skis. Didn't spill a drop, but man, so much easier to float them up, wander into the store, visit a little, hand the gas boy a tip, then motor away. The biggest factor in moving away from the on shore buy was hauling the gas. The threat of a fireball kept me on edge the entire ride.

buy a skid tank and mount it on an old boat trailer. you can buy 250-300 gal at a time. most skid tanks comewith  pumps.

In June of 2000 I was filling a 28 gallon portable tank on wheels in the bed of my pickup. Static electricity caused a fire. I was burned about 40% and spent 4 weeks in UAB burn hospital. The sign at most pumps that says to put tank on ground when filling is for real. With a 28 gallon tank you would need ramps to load. My info is the static is because of bed liners. My mistake was pulling the hose out while the flames were coming out of the opening. Changes of a fire are very remote but it does happen.

I have a habit of putting the cans on the ground, but it's one of those things you always wonder if there really is a danger or is it just an "old wives tale".  You are the first person I've ever heard of that actually had a fire from static electricity.  I'm very sorry such a horrible thing happened to you, but I hope all readers will heed your information and experience.  It's kind of like the advice, "Don't run your blower during fueling because it can draw fumes down into the bilge which can explode, but DO run the blower after fueling to exhaust any leftover fumes."  Important stuff many of us forget too often.  I've always used 5 gallon cans because of the weight of the 25 gal dispensers, glad I have.

Thanks for warning us all.

When ever I am filling the skid tank, I let the safety chain touch the ground.
BTW all gas filler hoses are are required by law to have a ground in them.  The purpose of the ground is to keep problems like yours from happening.
You can purchase farm fuel hoses that are ungrounded and much cheaper,  but I don't use them.  And I would assume that the gas station doesn't.  If the statute has not run you might want to contact a big time plaintiffs firm.

Thank you so much ski eagle for posting this...I have filled small and large containers before while still in the truck bed...never again.  I am sorry this happened to you and hope you doing well now.  Thanks again for a post that should give us all something to think about.

Concur totally with OSMS "I'm very sorry such a horrible thing happened to you, but I hope all readers will heed your information and experience."

I will not haul gas for the .50 cents a gallon savings, and I have a flat lot lot and my driveway turns into a boat ramp so I can drive right to the pier.  Seadoo's I sometimes fill with a can if they are on the trailer, but if the craft is in the water I go go see the great guys at Bay Pines Marina.  The risk/reward is just not there for me.  Of course the fact that it was my fifth hernia operation that got staff infection recently, so I may be biased against toting fuel @ 8lbs/gal.

Good luck and happy boating!!
