Who, standing OUTSIDE a building, fires a "warning shot" horizontally into the nearby woods because they think a break-in is underway INSIDE the building? Seems a warning shot would be fired up. Need more details, but this case may challenge the limits of the stand your ground law in Alabama. Sad in any case.

Will be interesting to see what the facts are as they come out but I feel very sorry for her and her family regardless of the circumstances. Sadly, this will be seized on by the anti-gun crowd who totally ignore the lives saved by people who legally carry a gun and use it for protection.

Maybe we should start posting the stories from "The Armed Citizen" in each month's Amreican Rifleman magazine.

Good point - last I heard a bullet shot from a handgun does not have the velocity to put it into orbit, so it WILL come down somewhere and hit something....

As MM said, we need to get the facts.

No matter what the outcome I will still carry, because there are far more sinister people out there intent on violating good citizens' persons and property, and I want to be able to defend myself and my family.

MrHodja - What do you mean to imply with this post in response to the original posting?

He was responding to my post about how the anti-gun crowd will ignore all the instances where people use guns to save lives versus this sad event.

That is true and a good point. Even though the velocity will be much less for the falling object it may still be enough to cause damage and even fatal.

MM has it right.  There is a page every month in the American Rifleman that tells stories of armed ordinary citizens successfully defending themselves from miscreants through the use of firearms.

Sorry if I confused you.

Yes, that will likely happen and it is my concern that something like this can result in needless changes being made to the stand your ground rule. I have a handgun permit and sometimes do carry a gun with me. I don't want my right to use it if needed further restricted. But I do not think I would fire "warning shots" (in air or ground) if I suspected a burglary was in progress inside. The released details on this case are sketchy so far.

Heard a story on the radio today about a fellow in Montgomery who came home and saw his neighbor's house being burglarized.  One of the perps was bent over putting something in the car, and when the man approached him to ask what he was doing, the burglar shot him in the chest point blank.

Moral to that story is call 911 and stay your distance, but it is just another example of why good folks should be prepared to protect themselves.

You can fire a warning shot in the air, in the ground. and within a 360 degree circle. Rather amazing that they hit her with all that space to fire the shot. I wonder if they had aimed at her would they have been as successful? Firing shots to protect a cabin seems a little much. They could have captured the burglar when he came out of the cabin without firing the shots. But, it is fun to fire so fire away .

On the surface it APPEARS to be terribly careless, stupid, or nonchalant in the use of a firearm.

Will be interesting to see if any revelations come available that might modify that observation.

We need to get the facts before insinuating anything like what happened in previous situations. Many people want someones head to roll before they have the facts. Justice is the thing we need not accusations of what might have happeened and who may be responsible.

I'd like to keep up with this as the details come out. It may be justified simply an unfortunate accident with respect to the fishermen shooting the girl or it could lead to much more.

If she went there with  the 3 guys to burgle the fish camp then she is as guilty as they are. She should pick better friends. I am sorry she was shot but when one chooses that vocation then that is one of the hazards. Choices have consequences.
It is interesting that in England most burglaries occur at night. In the U S most occur in day time when the homeowner is away. Burglars do not wish to encounter an armed householder. In England they are disarmed

Old Diver - The case is not so simple as you state. Read Alabama Castle Doctrine Law (Section 13A-3-23). Of course someone can protect their own home if entered by an intruder. That is not at question in this case. This case appears to be 3 fishermen staying at an adjoining fish camp that went to investigate the early morning noise of a suspected break in nearby. They were correct. Three young guys had in fact broke in to a vacant cabin and were inside the cabin. Two of the fishermen on the outside of the cabin fired their weapons as a warning. One killed a girl who was hiding outside the cabin. This is assumed an accident at this time. The gray area of the law is what constitutes knowingly/intentionally putting yourself in imminent danger and then using that danger as the justification for killing someone? That is the challenge being made in the current Florida case and it is likely to be in this case as well. The Alabama stand your ground law does not allow for you to intentionally enter into danger in order to protect your neighbor's property. You are allowed to observe at a safe distance and call 911.
