Per a press release from APCo< Lake Martin will not fill this year due to the drought.  Even though APCo gained approval to keep the lake three feet higher this past winter, they will be unable to fill the lake.  Lord help us if they had not kept it up during the winter with a special variance.  The HOBOs have requested a five foot drop in winter pool ever since the relicensing started 5 years ago, instead of the APCo requested seven foot drop, which incidentily is the most profitable for APCo.  The situation we find ourselves in is proof that a three foot rise in winter pool will not stave off a drought.

It says:

"As the result of extremely dry weather conditions, Lake Martin is not expected to reach full pool by the beginning of this summer."

I would take that to mean it may reach full pool AFTER the beginning of the summer.

Possible??

Thanks,
LL

but it's not likely.  As spring moves into summer the cold fronts that bring us the soaking rains needed to finish filling the lake, give way to summer thunder storms that may wet a smaller area but not the whole watershed which is what is needed.

Interestingly, I read a long range weather prediction that called for the start of an El Nino period by late summer.  El Nino brings cooler, wetter weather to the Southeast.  In fact, this prediction called for a hot early summer, with a cooler late summer and fall.  Pray for rain.

One never knows, it all depends on rain.....one good tropical storm could fill us up.

This may be a stupid observation, but here goes.....Lake Martin is fed by the Tallapoosa River, it is damned up by Martin Dam, if they want the lake full they could fill it real quick by not letting any water go through the dam. Correct?

That is correct, but you need to look at the river system as a whole. If the water stops here, it creates an even bigger imbalance as it flows away. Minimum flows are regulated by the Feds.

At least we are close. One more good rain and the lake should be pretty close to full!

It probably would have already been full it APC didn't let water out every time it rains.

I've been wondering what this means since I read it a few days ago. If by "fill" you mean "full pool," well, the Lake hasn't filled for several years. I thought I remembered it hit 490 last year and stuck for a very short time, but the history line doesn't seem to back that up.

My observation is they usually hold it about 6" below the rule when the rule line is flat and water is plentiful.....even on a good year, it stays at about 489.5 unless there are some big rains. Given the dry conditions, I'm grateful we have what we have now, but some rain sure  would be appreciated.

Mo Mom once told me that some years way back, she and my Dad were at the Lake during a big rain, and the water level rose so fast you could literally watch it come up. It exceeded full pool and lapped up over their top step. I'm not sure how high it went but definitely rose above full pool levels and much higher than they ever saw it before or since -- that's one time in over 50 years at the Lake.

I've always believed the possibility of a quick rise like that are why they leave a little cushion....makes sense to me when we're at or near full pool.
