Hello - I am new to the area having moved from Atlanta and Lake Lanier. I live in Birmingham and am looking for advice on the best marina to store my boat. It is a SeaRay 270 Sundeck and would like it to be convient to both Birmingham and the activity on the lake. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I live in Bham as well and keep my boat stored at River North Marina, it is the closest marina to you, but it is not the closest to the most popular areas of the lake, if you want to be close to popular areas, I would suggest the Ridge which is another russell marina, or Kawaliga.  The ridge is very close to Chimney Rock and most of the lake restaurants are on that side of the lake.  It really is all just about personal preferance. River north isn't as nice and fancy as some of the other marinas, but it is convenient for me.

If price and service aren't important, the Russell Marinas are your best choice, as they are the most convenient. The Singleton Group Marinas are by far the best for price and service, but not the most convenient to Birmingham. Austin runs the finest marinas on the lake, because they still care about their customers. Russell doesn't need your business, as they will tell you they have plenty of people who will take your slip should you choose to let it go. But as long as you're going to keep the bill paid, and not complain about lengthier, costlier repairs, go with Russell. The 15 minutes you'll save each time is worth a lot over the course of the life of a boat.

Also think about this the boat uses much more gas than car and if you will spend a lot in one area you would save by storing in that area.

I went through your same thought process late last summer. I bought a used Sea Ray Sundeck 240 without a trailer. I could have bought a trailer and kept it at our cabin, but my thought was that for what a trailer cost I could store it for a while, plus I figured the ease of storing it would let me use it more, and so far I have been right about that.

Kowaliga Marina is the closest to our cabin, so I called them, but they did not have room for a boat my size, because once you count the swim deck it's actually almost 26 feet.  They simply did not have a single rack available on the inside for a boat like mine. Their only options were wet slips storage and I didn't want to do that.

I ended up calling Anchor Bay and storing it there and it has been one of the best decisions I have made regarding my boat. First of all, they are cheaper than Kowaliga. Secondly, and most importantly, they are genuninely nice people and their service attitude is a refreshing delight. They care for my boat like it's their own, noting little things like yesterday they told me my battery reading looked a little weak. I hadn't noticed. Plus they will gas it up (ethanol free and reasonably priced), fill up my cooler with ice and whatever (beverages there cost the same as at C stores) and have it ready to go (warmed up and bimini up, I crank and go).  At the end of many weekends last summer my family grabbed a bite to eat at the restaurant on site, it was perfect.

I am biased now as a devoted fan of them, but I am telling you, their welcoming, accommodating attitude is a real difference maker to me.

I am also a great fan of fAnchor Bay.  They are very friendly and nice.  We tried the Ridge Marina and had terrible service from their service department.  They never return phone calls and their work was weeks behing schedule.

I have had problems in the past as well with Russell Marine. With the Ridge at the top of the list, they tell you one thing and do another. Go with Anchor bay or Blue Creek, Harbor Pointe is also a good place as well.

John, you'd better hire a car-starter and a food-taster; you don't have the anonymity that some who speak ill of the Tiny Kingdom and its Tinier Emperor do.

I think John is married. If so, no need to add payroll.

my post was a praise of Anchor Bay and not a comment on Kowaliga. I never got to know what their service is like because they had no room there to begin with.
