My Brother-in-love found two 5 foot water moccasins mating in his front yard Saturday.  At the bend in Manoy Creek.

One got away.

This is a bad year for snakes. We killed two last weekend...a 4+ ft and a almost 6 ft that was going after the grandkids in the lake.....plus saw a 2 ft. Have had our lake home for 27 years and haven't killed 10 total in 27 years.

We have seen more this year than any other year.   Make sure you know what type you are killing.  Don't kill the King Snakes as they eat other snakes including poisonous ones.

In the next couple of weeks, we will be announcing the creation of Lake Martin Snake Removal. We'll have a website, we'll be advertising on this site, and so on.

If you can't wait that long, you can email us at snakeremoval@mindspring.com, and we can probably help. (The phone number will be active early next week, and I'll post it then.)

One service we will offer is Picture Identification; if you email us a pic we'll ID it for a small fee; if you need the Removal Service, then the Pic ID fee will be subtracted from the Removal Fee. But for the next week or so, I'll do Picture IDs for free; you can send them to the email address listed above.

One thing I can say, after almost five decades of studying snakes: most people are terrible at snake identification, especially if they don't like snakes, and even if they think they are experts. A general rule of thumb: if someone sees a snake and wants it dead, they probably aren't any good at all at identifying snakes. Sorry if that hurts some feelings, but in my experience, it's almost 100% true. So don't be too freaked out by stories about the hordes of Cottonmouths and Copperheads people see around the lake; the vast majority of those snakes are something else, and completely harmless. Last weekend I saw 21 snakes (unlike everyone else mentioned in this post, I was actually looking for them) and 20 of them were harmless.

We're looking forward to helping out!

When it comes to snakes, I am the neighborhood expert. Maybe even the entire lake area. But surely all of Alabama. I always say "There are only two types of snakes in the world. A Chickensnake and a Rattlesnake. So if you ever see a snake and it does not have a chicken in it's mouth, it is a rattlesnake so be careful. Feel free to call me for any of your snake ID needs, just be sure to save a feather.

I only know of one kind of snake and that is the Cotton Mouth Water Rattler!!!  I believe in killing them all and letting god sort them out! I learned how to identify them by reading the late great Lewis Grizard.

We have killed four total in two weeks.  Never saw a single one in our yard or lake in the past six years.  This seems like a problem elsewhere.  Assume the mild winter didn't eradicate as many as usual in the offseason.

South of Pleasure Point. We had our two small grandkids in the water and the neighbors had about a dozen in the water. Lots of people and noise to discourage snakes. This snake was aggressively going after people, and after chasing everyone out of the water, it was trying to climb onto our wave runners and then trying to climb onto a pontoon boat and the pier. Scared the mess out of everyone. Neighbor shot it, swam in to net him, and then had to finish him off on land. Almost 6 ft. Long. 27 years on the lake and never seen anything like it.

Wow....We had a cotton mouth attack us in a similar fashion about 25 years ago in a secluded slough on the Warrior river, but I've never seen anything like it on Lake Martin. Still haven't seen any snakes here this year. I actually like most snakes and think they're beneficial, but will kill a cotton mouth if I see one.

Last year at the end of the season we had an aggessive water snake come after us. This year I put a trap out and have caught 3 so far. Let one go, the others drowned because the lake level came up and covered over the trap. Water snakes.

Saw a water snake on Memorial Day weekend.  Internet search says there is only one water snake that is poisonous in the US, the water moccasin.  Maybe some forum vetnarians can verify.

there is a species of water snake that can be very aggresive. I think it is the northern water snake or something like that. They come after you. A water moccasin will do the same but only after threatened I think. But this other snake doesn't even have to be threatened. Luckily its not poisonous. Someone correct me were wrong please. Not an expert.

Yes. Hearing of snake problems all over the lake. Had one in our yard a month ago when wife went down with some girlfriends. I want to get better at identifying them so I don't kill a rat snake or a king snake.

Methinks from my 20 years here that the snakes are always around us. They are most obvious in May prior to Memorial Day, when everybody shows up, cranks up, gets louder and more often. Then, they hide or move back into the woods.
Now, if I can just keep the Beavers from chopping down my trees,,?&&%#$

"Name: lakerlady - Subject: Snakes Date: 6/5/2012 10:12:05 AM I have killed 7 Cottonmouth, 1 copperhead this year. Usually only see 2 or 3 a year" Probable translation: "I have killed 7 water snakes, 1 rat snake this year." But the "Copperhead" might really have been a Copperhead. I have noticed more and more of them as the number of King Snakes have declined. (Note: "More and more" doesn't mean that all I see are Copperheads; I still see more rat snakes and racers around here than anything else, except water snakes.)

I understand your doubt but, I grew up fishing the river swamp dead lakes down around Brewton Al. I know the difference between a water snake and a Cottonmouth. My Grandfather guarded a hunting reserve that had several dead lakes in it. My cousin and I fished there often and killed our fair share of copperheads and cottonmouths. I will however say in my book the only good snake is a King snake.

We have only lived here on the lake for 2 years but have never even seen a snake anywhere. However this year our neighbor passed a huge rattlesnake on the road so backed up and killed it... As of 3 weeks ago we have a huge water mocassin in our cove this year that has to go!! I actually saw him come right down the middle of the cove and now he is under our dock and goes back & forth morning & dusk. Plus last week I had a 3' one at our front door that our Doberman ran by not seeing it & stepped on its tail. I ran got shovel & killed it!! I also killed a baby while planting at the dock!! That is 3 in 3 weeks & 1 is still here!! Even with boat coming & going last weekend & our Sea Doo in & out at our dock he hasn't left:-( I heard mocassins think this is there turf & you are invading not the other way around. There are no good snakes to me unless it's a black yard snake but when there is even a question it's not worth it... I will take a chipmunk over a snake any day.  Plus I heard mocassins eat anything including other snakes & if you want to see go to YouTube and watch a mocassin kill & eat a rattlesnake can't imagine a water snake having a chance. Wish there was a way to get rid of the one in our cove ...yesterday!!
