APCo just posted their operating schedule for the next few days and it looks like we're in for a draining.  They're scheduling 3 turbines to run at once each afternoon, a rare occurrence this time of year in the middle of a drought.  Funny, they're not doing the same on any other dams.  That could take us down a foot over the next few days.

people who use the lake should all start calling any APC elected officials, the HOBOs LMRA Russell Lands and any one else you can think of including Cathouse.  Tell Cat to get a FAT HOES HANGOUT. bait it with KRISPY KREEMS

don't waste your time telling me about the weather the farmers down stream or any of the other garbage you are thinking.  I DON'T CARE. AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT OR SEE IT.

your lame excuses for other people doing what they want to do is just drivel.

and don't say "it won't do any good"  certainly sitting with your thumb up your anuice has done not good.

just start calling and try to organize a occupy martin dam movement.

start a raftup at the dam not at the rock this 4th.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST TRY GO RECRUIT FAT LADIES TO SWIM IN THE LAKE at least it will make the lake look more full.

Kizma you are full of yourself aren't you!  I don't see anything from the original post that warrants your retort.  It is true that APCO is about to run 3 turbines some, that will (barring any real rain events) dramatically reduce the lake level.

It does seem odd for them to be releasing that amount given the conditions.

Go ahead, I guess you can attack me now.

The weather forecast over the next 10 days is for brutal heat.  I suspect that APCO needs the extra source of electrons so folks can keep their houses at a reasonble temperature.

Jesse know best!!  It couldn't possibly be that the current and projected heat wave of triple digit temps has any bearing on the decision to generate.  Nah, it's all about jesse.

Actually one has to wonder if it is more of the continued slapdown of the HOBO by APCO.  Laughable of course, but I couldn't resist....lol.

Another reason I am SURE has no bearing on the decision of when and where to generate is that electricity once generated can only be 'shipped' so far (about 300 miles I believe) before it is a losing proposition.  So naturally APCO would choose to generate from the plant closest to the grid that is experiencing the  highest drain.  Maybe a plant with a large capacity that is centrally located between the two densest population areas of the state.  It couldn't possibly be that maybe the floods in Florida have knocked some generating capacity off line ( I don't know if this is the case, but choose to look at a situation in it's totality as opposed to how it affects ME ME ME).  Nah, it's all about jesse and how much water he has to play in.

I for one choose to revel in the 488 or so that we still will have as opposed to whining and complaining about the foot or so we don't have.  Makes for a much more enjoyable second half of summer.

think about a few years ago when the water was about 5 feet from your pier and you walked in red mud to get to the boat that was beached in front of your place.  When you ponder how awful it was to try and enjoy the lake with that condition....having the water dropped down to around 2 feet below full pool is not anything to blink at.  Cat can I borrow a line.....jus sayin.

dmp -  You must not know KA that well....he has been a complete jacka$$ for years.  His posts are always negative and loaded with smarta$$ responses.  It's in his nature....he has proven year after year.  You just have to do one of two things....know what he is and ignore it or click the magic button so you don't have to see it.

I hope they drop it 5 feet in the next three weeks. Less people on the lake and more beach to enjoy.

It is money STUPID. Not airconditioning.

Less than 4% of SO's  generation capacity is hydro.

Southern Company subsidiaries operate hydroelectric, gas, coal, and nuclear generation sources to generate approximately 200 terawatt-hours of electricity. In 2009, coal represented 57 percent of the company's output, followed by nuclear (23%) and natural gas (16%). Renewable hydroelectric power represented 4 percent of Southern's generation. Coal-based generation dropped significantly in 2009 from an average of 70% between 2005 and 2008

Lifer you better go back to EE school if that is how you think the grid works.  Or just do a little research on Enron.

This is about money or water flow to make money for somebody.

Big questions is why are no other lakes going to flow some water?

Well kizma I know more about the grid than the average bear I can assure you.  You are right is about money for sure.  Martin has had generator upgrades that make it more efficient than most of the others in the state.  I also know that they sometimes sell power to other grids across the nation.  When they do this they get on average about 15 times what they sell it to us for.  They also like to do it with hydro because it is the cheapest way to generate it.  Hydro is also the method of choice for these transfers for the very reason that you state, so little of the consumer power sold to us is generated by hydro.  Therefor, when they sell 'off grid' they can generate the power with hydro without depleting the grid of the Alabama system.

Earlier this week  it was reported that the Texas grid was strained due to the highest demand ever.  I am sure they were 'importing' power from many other sources. One of those may have been APCO.  Although as I stated earlier electricity can only be transmitted about 300 miles before it degrades to be being to expensive, it can be transferred from grid to grid with cooperation of the other systems all the way across the country in extreme circumstances.  We are blessed in Alabama to be in the middle of Southern Company's grid.  We enjoy the lowest rates in the country and NEVER have issues with 'brown outs' and the like.

Now you go and do some research.  Disprove anything I have said, I dare you.  My Father in law retired from SOCO last year and has educated me for years in the workings of APCO and the national grid in general.  So go and pick a fight elsewhere on the forum with someone that doesn't know you and where you may have superior knowledge. Maybe OSMS would like to retain you to sue APCO for daring to use the lake for what it is intended.

In addition to your post, we have found that Lake Martin only provides less than 1/4 of one percent (0.24%) of the megawatts produced by Alabama Power.  The entire Tallapoosa River system (Harris, Martin, Yates, and Thurlow) produces a little over 1/2 on one percent (0.64%).

Also, interesting is the fact that Alabama Power sells about 7% of their production to other electric companies outside Alabama, which means they are using Alabama citizen's water for other states.  While it's good business to sell excess capacity, it's questionable whether doing so at the expense of Alabama's citizens is best.  By state law, all water in Alabama belongs to the citizens of Alabama.

Don't know it everyone noticed that APCo rates have gone up about 9% in the last couple of months.

See the HOBO article in the June issue of Lake Magazine.

Quoting osms:

"In addition to your post, we have found that Lake Martin only provides less than 1/4 of one percent (0.24%) of the megawatts produced by Alabama Power.  The entire Tallapoosa River system (Harris, Martin, Yates, and Thurlow) produces a little over 1/2 on one percent (0.64%).

"

End quote.

Do you have any idea how petty and ridiculous you sound?  Rhetorical question, no  need to embarrass yourself with an answer.  So only .24% of APCO power comes from Martin and 7% of total output goes to other systems. I will leave to others to figure out how little of 'our water' is used to generate to other systems.  APCO, as much as you may not like it, is licensed to use this and all other lakes for the generation of electricity.  Yes they sell to other systems, and as I stated for an overage of 15 times what we pay.  This helps keep our rates the lowest in the country.  They were doing this DECADES before you came along and will continue for decades after you are gone.  I understand it makes you feel self important to bash APCO as you do.  I hope you continue because I enjoy the smackdowns you continue to get from them.

As you so ineptly remind us, the water in this lake belongs to ALL the citizens of this state, not just those of us lucky enough to live along it's banks.  I bet the other 99.999%+ of Alabama residents don't give a rats f@rt  whether we loose an inch or so of water for the generation of CHEAP electricity.  And what 'expense to Alabama's citizens'?  What you really mean is wah wah, I may loose a little water in front of my leased lot. IF I was in charge I would add a clause to your lease that you MUST stop whining about water levels or your lease will be terminated.  But alas, I am not.   Don't project your pettiness onto the 'citizens of Alabama".  You are the only person I see/hear complaining.  The rest of the state understands that APCO are the experts and appreciate that we do have such low rates and that we have such a beautiful resource to play on.

If you choose not to remove your post I will respond and you will not like my response.
As you said we know each other,  I have no animosity for you and in fact feel sympathy for you, as I do for anyone who has had a health situation.

btw,   my hair is 2" long,  I have a certificate from Hawk for donating 4 13 inch "BLOND" ponytails to his Wigs for Kids.
Incidentally "BLOND" was there work and they will only take hair that has not been died and which contains less than 5% grey.

Also I did not steal the Pirate and you have the pics that prove it.
