It's been a while since I've been on this forum. Nice to be back. I just wanted to say, that we ate at Big B BBQ this weekend and it was great!!!! It had been years since we had gone there and it was at the old location then. My ribs were very good. I never hear much about that place, so I thought I'd mention it for new comers to Lake Martin.

To me Big B's has always been a "hit or miss" and we have missed more than hit.  I remember getting better food at the old location.  I know that has nothing to do with it, but the way it is.

The "clincher" for us was:  My wife ordered ribs, I ordered bbq or something. It was taking forever, and ever.  We asked and the waitress said "They are cooking the ribs"   Now, in my mind, the rib cooking process is something that happens way before I get there.  They were not memorable, we have been back a time or two, but not impressed.

We hope Cecil's reopens somewhere.

Agree with LNG.  Have been underwhelmed on the few occasions we've tried them.  Go back every now and then just to see if our memory had gone bad, but experience has been the same.  Also agree on the ribs - cook time is measured in hours, not minutes.

I belive you, but my experience was good this weekend and the rib meat fell right off the bone- a sign of good slow cooking.

We stop off for a Pork Sandwich on the way to or from the lake from B'Ham, occasionally. Not bad at all. But, for ribs,,, nope. I suspect there is some hidden rule that dictates that a successful restaurant, when expanding, is required to reduce portions, increase prices, increase the noise level, slow the wait staff, destroy the old ambiance, and in general, screw up a good thing. Maybe just me,,, I could be wrong.

Big B moving was not an expansion move, it was a forced move.  The old property was supposedly sold.  I heard it was a Walgreens moving to that location.  I know at the time Walgreens was in a major expansion themselves.  I think the old pit probably turned out a better flavor.  It had decades of gunk to add flavor....lol.  It was definitely a different experience back then.

I've always had a decent meal at Big B, but I usually get the pulled pork plate or sandwich..... I'm never overly impressed with ribs at any restaurant.

Have you been to the original Dreamland or Archibald's in Tuscaloosa. 

Great ribs.

And although the baby backs at Uncle Nicks are a totally different animal they are good.

If you want GOOD BBQ then you have to try Sho-Nuff BBQ. There BBQ is cooked fresh daily and you can't beat it anywhere around here.

I've been to Dreamland as well as Jack Stack's in KC, Corkey's and Rondezvous in Memphis, and several other famous BBQ joints all around the country; one of the benefits of my job.  I get to at least one or two a month and often more. I don't care for regular spare ribs (only meaty baby backs) and I guess I've turned into a rib snob since I make them at home at least once or twice a month. I've had some really good ribs in the better restaurants, but given the price and what I can do, I usually opt for pulled pork or brisket when I'm out. Even most cheap places don't usually screw up pulled pork real bad and  and I haven't been able to match a quality brisket served in the better BBQ joints (but I've started working on it).

I think they are not near as good since they moved but that's just my opinion. You no longer look at the guy that is serving up your plate.  I didn't like the new  "Paul Bunyan"  decor with the weird immovable tables and chairs either. I pity the help that has to stack the chairs to clean the floors.

I don't think there is a decent BBQ place in the area worth recommending. If there were one it would be packed every day.

 I would love for someone to open a real pit BBQ place that's not too big and has a simple menu with the following: 

 1. Slow cooked pork & brisket that's not dry or tasteless.
 2. Good slaw, fries & beans.
 3. An outstanding brunswick stew.
 4. A good ketchup based and a mustard based sauce.

Add to that 3 specials with some southern stuff like peas and collards and I think you have a big winner.

I wouldn't call it really good but it's not bad. Better than most in the area. Very quick service. Generous helpings.

Only warning is don't let them put the sauce on the meat. It's not good and they drowned my first order with it.

Sho nuff is good BBQ, hands down. I agree on sauce on the side, though. I do that for every Q restaurant I visit, from Memphis to Mobile. If you do that you can taste the meat and it separates the pretenders from the cooks. I have never been disappointed in Sho Nuff, they can prepare a butt properly.  I disagree with the thought that there is no proper restaurant in the area because if there were, it would be packed. This is a small town.  Plus even in large towns, like Birmingham, good Q goes without crowds. Dmitiri's in Homewood comes to mind - but the biggest example is Ollie's. They struggled after a long time downtown, then moved out towards Hoover and flopped, sadly. But their Q was always awesome. The wisdom of the crowds does not always work with food. To wit - McDonalds.
