Between Monday, July 2nd, and Tuesday July 3rd, we had THREE boats come in with a complaint of "boat ran fine yesterday, and ran only about a minute this morning and quit.  We had another on July 5th as well.  Normally, our first test before work is to make sure the engine is trying to run on GAS, and not water, or anything else for that matter.  Here are the results.  Boat #1 12 gallons of water pulled from tank.  Boat #2 16 gallons of water pulled from tank.  Boat #3 9 gallons of water pulled from tank.  (We had JUST serviced these boats) You get the picture by now.  Here is what we think.....  During the night, gas is being extracted from the suspect boat/boats.  Then re-filled with water so that the boat does not run the next day, and has to go to repair shop to find out why.  Most shops are backed up a couple weeks, so the gas thiefs have time to do this for a few days.  My shop is normally not backed up and therefore we could check the boats and send them right back out.  We test fuel BEFORE we do anything.  Just an FYI, if you park your boat at your house with say 1/2 tank, and the next day you have a full tank, you got robbed.  This is ongoing at this moment, and we have two more in the shop for same problem now.  Remember, it is easy to rig up a remote bilge and pump water into a boat tank from the lake.  I will let yall know how many this happened to over the next few days.  And, no, I  dont think you can possibly get that much water from your local gas station.  This is a very serious post.  So, if your boat is not running right. and at a shop, ask for a fuel sample rite quick.  Also, we have contacted and are in communications with the Marine Police about this.

Respectfully,
Steve Northington.

Appreciate the heads up and I will get the word out to all my non internet lake friends.  Did these all seem to be from the same general area of the lake?

This should be reported to the Sheriff's office as well.  Hope the Marine Police have done so.  The strange thing to me is why a common thief would take the time to refill the tank with water.  Almost sounds like sabotage to me.  Stealing gas sounds like something that might be done by a low life, but refilling with water just doesn't make sense.  Might want to look further.  Were the boats in the same area, in the water?

You missed the point....  During a BUSY week, steel the gas first.  Then put water back in the tank.  The boat will NOT run and therefore must be taken to a shop.  Shops at Lake Martin and everywhere else are backed up.  The boat will NOT be looked at for a couple of weeks because of backlog.  That buys the gas thiefs time, so that they can do it for several days without detection or discovery.  (I think I busted there azz)  Just sayin.  If you think about it, it is somewhat clever on there part~!  You got to agree with that.  Remember, CAT is always thinkin', lol.  BUT, our policy at Cathouse Marine is somewhat different, and that is why I made the post.  Not long after you leave your boat with us, we poke around just to kinda get a general idea as to what is going on.  Especially if we just worked on  the boat.  All of these boats, at this point were from Hwy 34 area (both sides) and Stillwaters area. One was very close by your home.   I only get to see a few of the boats, and have no idea how many may be in line at other shops.  Although I spent the day at Prattville store today, Steven told me that he wrote many repair orders today, and I will check those out when I return to Cathouse Lake Martin on Tuesday.  I'll let yall know.  And, as far as the Sheriffs office goes, I am no investigater, but will gather information and knowledge.  OSMS, you know everyone in your area, so let them know to be on the lookout.

Respectfully,
Steve

Was there any gas in the tanks? If so, how much? How much did each owner think he had. If you steal a shiftload of gas, what do yOu do with it?

My thought is a thief wants gas and a clean get away.  Hanging around the scene of the crime to refill the tank with water doubles the thief's exposure and increases his chance of discovery.  Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I just get the feeling there's more motive.  I guess the thief at least has created an insurance claim for the owner by pouring water in the tank.  Does it look like the job was done from water or land?  With both Sandy and Blue Creek sites hit, I would assume it was a drive up job.  If it was a drive up, then the Sheriff has jurisdiction for sure.

I thought about the exposure as well.  When we got the water out, there was about half tank left in the boats.  If they are sucking the gas out of the filler tube, they prolly can't get more than half out.  I am guessing the bilge pump rig possibly used to put the water back in would be very quick (if that is what they did) because most bilge pumps are 500 to 1000 gallons per hour.  Thats 15 or so gallons a minute, so you figure if they had a 1000 gph 12 volt pump they spent about 45 seconds (give or take a second or two) of extra exposure.  Not very much.  Thanks just what I was thinking anyway.  What made me think this out like I did was because "my boat quit and I dont have it for the forth and had to take it to the local shop" conversation would not travel very fast.  However, "someone stole gas from my boat last night would run through the hood like wild fire".  And Kizma, a couple of wakeboard boats can run through a hundred gallons a day easily.

Just sayin'

Mine ran for 45 minutes the stopped and will not start at all. That is too long of run for it to be a water in the gas, right??

The other thing is it would be very hard to chase them if you saw them doing this. Jump into your boat to pursue and it won't run. Damn Just thinking.... How much gas maybe $40. worth. Frog
