The discussion is about the hatefulness of the Auburn-Alabama rivalry.

I went to Old Dominion University… which, until recently… had no football team.  Having gone to graduate school at Virginia Tech… the Hokies became my team. (PLEASE! Both Vicks should never be allowed to play professional football again.)

However, I married into the Auburn-Alabama rivalry.  I really enjoy it when it is good natured even irreverent… sometimes outrageous.  However, I have seen it raise its ugliness on numerous occasions. The put-downs get very personal and insulting.

Both my wife and I own and wear AU clothing… though neither of us went to school there (uh… well, my wife is enrolled in the OLLI program at Auburn).  For the Auburn-Alabama game, we are Roll Tide!  On ALL other occasions we are for the appropriate Alabama team.

As a military family, we have lived in many venues… and seen the very same juvenile, low-class behavior applied to other rivalries.  I wonder at the psychology of the bitterness.  I suspect it is born of gloating versus humiliation.  Gloating has never made anyone more attractive.

To disparage a person because they are being true to their school is very short sighted and hypocritical.  Look in the mirror and say to yourself, “You are stupid because you went to ________ !”    See any value in that?

As soon as it is not fun anymore… it loses its value… and demeans relationships.

I'm not a psychologist but have tried for years to figure out the rivalry phenomenon.  The closest I can come to explaining it is that people consider themselves to be a part of their team, and thus when their team wins that makes them, by that association, "better" than the fans of their defeated rival (again, rival team and fans considered as one).  Its an ego "I am better than you because my team beat your team" thing.  Totally false, but still the feeling of superiority.

Mind you, that doesn't apply to all fans, just the ones who would do something like attempt destroy a rival's tradition (e.g., Toomer's Corner oaks) to deny the rival the ability to celebrate a victory. I kow a lot of both types, good, decent people who celebrate the sport and are gracious in defeat and humble in victory and the ones who would plaster "13-10 ESAD!" on the back window of their pickup after an Iron Bowl victory.

If you go to the Auburn Alabama game wearing your AU clothing and cheer for Alabama I can understand why you feel the way you do about the rivalry.

Fishy… did you have trouble with reading comprehension in your public school education?

I don't often agree with Goofy, but will have to admit your statement that you purchased Auburn gear but root for Alabama (i.e., the Roll Tide cheer) leads to a bit of confusion and therefore his conclusion that you might wear Auburn gear while rooting for Alabama is plausible.

On second reading… an implausible conclusion is that we might wear AU clothing to the Alabama game and root for Alabama.  Hmmm… if read THAT way… yes, FISHY might conclude that.  Unfortunately, we are late re-entrants to Alabama and can’t get tickets to the Iron Bowl except at scalper prices… which we can’t afford.  If we could go, we’d wear Alabama colors… and root for Alabama (where my wife went).

THEREFORE, in clarification… we watch the AU-Alabama game AT HOME… wearing red-and-white… and screaming Roll-Tide.

For games where these two are not playing each other… we root for the appropriate Alabama team! For example:  When Auburn is playing Georgia Tech, we root for Auburn.

True story....interesting phenomenon (to me).  Shortly after Auburn won the national championship, I was in a drug store in Dadeville.  A 'poor soul', whom I would guess never made it out of high school, said to the druggist, "We won, we won".  I was trying to figure out how he was part of the 'We'.  What gave him the feeling that he participated in the win?  I just found it interesting.  Insights?

I too attended public school (Virginia, Maryland, and Florida) and state colleges (Virginia).  My public education was very complete and sufficient.

Then, the Federal Government got involved (DoE began operating in May, 1980).  The quality of public education has declined ever since.  We have gone from preparing for life… to pandering to self-esteem.  Abolish DoE... give the money directly to the states.

I do, however, apologize for offending anyone about their public education… whenever it was completed… or credit given to them.

You insult Alabama fans by wearing Auburn clothing, you insult Auburn fans by cheering for Alabama in the Iron Bowl, and you insulted all those who attended a public school. Now, apologize for the Romney The RINO for President sticker on your bumper but will really be voting for OBAMA 2012.

Do you think that Obama will complete his second term as President, or will he bail to become Supreme Secretary General of the UN?

Maj, that's why I am very clear when I refer to what used to be the public school system in this country that was second to none before the Federal government got involved. I now call it "government" schools because it is more about indoctrination in big government ideology and protecting the unions and administration than it is about preparing our students for their future. To be clear, there are still lots of very good public schools in this country but as a whole the government school system has been an abject failure and don't believe a word from the left wingnuts that its because of a lack of money. Some of the very worst government school systems spend the most and some of the most effective private school systems spend much less. Just compare the results from the Archdiocese of New York and the NYC government school system. And don't listen to the bull scat about the private schools taking the cream of the crop and leaving the dregs to the government schools. The Archdiocese offered to take a large number of students to be chosen by the government school system and for $9K per year would take them on. The unions and administration balked at the suggestion. Nuff said about that!

I call it "Fair Weather Fans". These are the same people who purchase magnetic car stickers which can be easily changed out to reflect whichever school is currently a "Winner". Thus, I am a Winner too. See my sticker?

I believe you are wrong GF, he gives up jobs that are beneath him fairly quickly - like when he, uh, well he had a job as, no, it was, well... he... uh. OK, so it is his first real job, but as much as he and his bride do not like the USA, he would bail in a second.

I really agree with Caseys above comment about "WE" supporters.  I usually let them expound on the greatness of US....and WE did this and WE did that.  I then ask them when did you attend/visit that school???  Oh..I never went there ...my car/pickup just came with those 12" decals plastered all over the windows.  My comments are for BOTH university supporters.  I went to ,,,played on their teams...and graduated from a smaller school in this state.  One who has sent our the invitation to THOSE universities....play us...anywhere and anytime.....WE supporters need a roadmap to get to Tuscalooosa or Auburn !!
