A "new to the lake" neighbor just installed five, count them, five sodium lights on his property. In the lake reflection, I now have ten sodium lights staring at me every time I go out on my deck at night. Way, way too much light, but I am sure they are happy, well lit campers.
Do I have any recourse?
I will put a plea for mercy in his mailbox in the morning, but it that fails, suggestions?

City folks got a house on the lake! Seems they feel safe and secure with LOTS of lights. LPS (low pressure sodium) are indeed intrusive, especially when multiplied by two from lake reflection. Mercury Vapor lights are worse, especially when the cover becomes broken and you have to see the bare bulb. Best of luck with this, Maybe they will come over to your side one evening and see what you are talking about.

Talk to them. If that fails play some loud music and when they complain make a deal....no lites no music. Check to see if the county has a nuisance ordinance about lights after a certain hour. Set up some lights like they use when doing road work at night on the interstate. I am sure you can rent a few for Labor Day weekend.

I'd sure try the soft approach first. Getting him to your side would help. Maybe a coompromise to get him to shutter the lights where they bother you the most.
I would also talk with the county sherriff's department to see if you could presuade them to agree it falls under the "disturbing of the peace" ordinance.
After exhausting that you may have to get legal help. That situation sounds more than an irritant. You have a right to the quiet enjoyment of your property and that in at least my mind constitutes a serious nusance.

...sure sounds like the worst case of "lighting overkill" one could have. Having a good relationship with your neighbor is also important to your enjoyment of the lake...tough problem. Maybe another neighbor or two chiming in could help to
ease this into a harmonious solution....good luck.

What is he doing that he needs five lights - running his own football league? If you have a direct shot at his lights, get five killer spotlights and aim them at each photo cell - you may be able to shut them down and get his attention...

Ok... since we are on the subject of neighbors and lights, here's my dilemma. We have a neighbor who has crafted a six foot tall cross out of two by fours, stuck it in a pot and wrapped it in a zillion Christmas lights. By day, it is very homemade looking, by night, it will put your eyes out. Now before everyone hollers that I am not being a Christian, this is not the case. I appreciate the meaning of the cross and certainly have no problem with anyone professing their love for God, but somehow this just seems inappropriate. From our dock, it looks more like a burning cross and it reflects across the water in an eerie way. I think it could be mistaken as offensive to some. My problem is primarily how bright it at night. It wouldn't matter if it were in the shape of a heart... it's just out of place and unsightly. Our slough is mixture of very nice houses and modest cabins, but everyone has very tasteful landscape lighting. This just sticks out like a sore thumb. How can I say anything without sounding like a heathen? I'm just tired of wearing my sunglasses at 9pm to enjoy a glass of wine on my dock:)

In the past, I have discussed the nuisance angle with Tallapoosa Sherrifs Dept and I can tell you they have NO appetite for dealing with these type things. I have had luck with the kind and gentle appeal to reason approach in a couple of cases like this on the lake. But every now and then you get a real Phillistine who wants to bow up over not "being told what to do on my own property". I tell those types, "if you can keep the light, noise, or whatever pollution constitutes the nuisance on your own property, then your right. Otherwise things are fixin to get real ugly." that has worked for me once but you have to not let up. Personally, I'd like to see all dawn to dusk lights outlawed for lake front property as well as switched spots that face the water.

Dogleg, lots of us that live full time on the lake would like to see these "so called security lights" shielded so the light is directed downward to light up a drive or other area only (that's what the owner's want to light up anyway) and not intrude on other's property. There is a product called a "Skycap" that is available for these types of lights. Would be nice if Skycaps would become a requirement when someone wants to install a pole light on their property.

While it probably won't help, point the person towards the International Dark Sky Association: http://www.darksky.org/outdoor-lighting for friendly neighbor outdoor lighting tips.
We have the same problem in our slough. A non-resident homeowner insists on having a sodium vapor light spew light 24/7 on not only his own lot, but everyone around him. If he wants to light up his entrance - fine, but don't make us 'pay' for it.

After reading all the posts on this thread the thing that comes to mind first is this; people actually move to the lake who are afraid of snakes! Yup. Imagine that! AND! they don't want deer in their yards! I'm surprised some of them haven't tried to gunite the lake bottom.....geez.
