Guys, I've got a dormer over my front porch and heard squirrels running around. The rest of my roof is high pitched without any inside space so I think they are in that one spot. I can see a spot on face board where they have chewed their way in. I have had them in my home in Bham and know they can cause expense. Any lake companies , or any ideas from experience? Many thanks...

One thing I have experienced, if they have nested in your attic once, they must be killed or they will chew up your house trying to get back in if you run them out but don't kill them.  Sad Fact.

Get a live trap and some peanut butter.  Most feed supply stores will have the trap.  Bait the trap.  Catch them and relocate them away from your home and patch the hole.  I think I spent $35 for the live trap that I have.  Well worth it.

Best cure I have ever seen is a 12 year old boy with a pellet rifle.

I've had to deal with the nasty critters several times now, and found this site to have the best, most practical advice on squirrel problems:

http://unexco.com/trapsquirrels.html

Every time I return to this site, I'm amazed at the research and detail this person/company has put out on the web. For example, they did scientific experiments they did to see how far away you have to take them before they return (see the "Releasing Squirrels" section a few pages down):

"When we hit the 5-7 mile range, using a zig-zag pattern, returns were rare, maybe 1 out of 15-20."

Good luck. I tried the capture-and-release strategy for one round of infestation, but when they came back I invested in a break-action pellet gun!

What about a 50 year old boy with a pellet rifle, a lawn chair and some beer?

Well, I guess both of those trump this 64 year old sitting out there this morning with a 12 guage.....

Not if you hit a few of them... It is results that count, not method. ;-)

.410, it's much quiter.  Just messin' with ya.  We have same problem at River Camp in Autaugaville.  I use a .22 cal pump  rifle with a 4x35mm scope.  It is super accurate.  It is my target rifle.  I use it for rodents and can get a mouse at 150 ft.  I use "shorts" most of the time because of the noise.  Now that we are on the subject, I have a .17 calibler bolt action bull barrel rifle.  Not sure if all are familiar with that gun, but you can do the same thing from 125 plus yards all day long.
Just sayin'.

It costs me twice as much to shoot my .410 than it does my 12 gauge - wear hearing protection (kinda like putting covers on bumpers).  My BIL has a .17 that he really likes, but I was thinking that an M134 minigun would take care of the squirrels, no bothersome field dressing to worry about...

12 ga field dresses just fine, de-bones at the same time.  Don't need a scope.  Why shoot a squirrel at 150 ft or yds, it's on somebody else's house at that distance.

Love thy Neighbor as yourself.  Thats why.  It's one of the TEN.  (pun intended, but serious)  I got to close, see you at Judy's in a few.  I'll buy you a drink.

Cat,
12 Gauge hurts my chest plate, stretches wires, just sayin'.  (:

Well, after considering much sage advice, I can report that 3 enemy forces have been declared deceased. The time and nature of their untimely demise shall remain unreported to accomodate HIPPA laws....

I have at least two in the yard around our cabin busily stripping the nuts off of trees for their winter's food supply, but we don't heat it in the winter so maybe they won't try to break in.

So was it lead poisoning....:>)
