Why Florida Really Changed Its Voting Rules

It’s common knowledge that Florida cut back on early voting in 2011 to reduce the turnout of blacks and other groups likely to vote for Democrats. But it’s refreshing to see that former top Republicans in the state are now saying so out loud.
In an interview with the Palm Beach Post published on Sunday, the former chairman of the Florida Republican party said voter suppression was the sole reason for the change to the election rules. Jim Greer, the party chairman in from 2006 to 2010, said he went to several meetings during which Republican officials discussed the damage that early voting — which brought an unprecedented number of black voters to the polls in 2008 — had done to the party.
“The Republican Party, the strategists, the consultants, they firmly believe that early voting is bad for Republican Party candidates,” Mr. Greer said. “It’s done for one reason and one reason only.”
He made it clear the stated reason for the change, to reduce voter fraud, was nonsense.

I am something of a follower of election statistics and the questions they raise...for instance, why does GA with a larger population than NC have fewer registered voters but a larger percentage of the voters to turn out. The stranger stat is why FL with only 75% of the population of TX (almost 7 million less) manage a voter turnout, even with the suppression, some 500,000 higher than the much larger Lone Star state. Does make me wonder why such a heavily Hispanic state would have such a depressed (suppressed??) turnout.

So what is the party explanation for reduced turnout on election day? I don't quite understand how such an incredible difference is made by changing the timing of voting. Bus schedules? Black folks can't get off work on election day? How is the Black vote suppressed by getting rid of early voting? Does this apply also to our military? Were they suppressed? What is the reason?

Archie, your figures don't wash. You didn't figure the number of kids under 18, according to http://datacenter.kidscount.org/data/bystate Texas has 2,863,733 more kids than Florida. Would you care to check your figures that you keep up with and revise your statement? It seems your emperical data usage is rather weak in some areas. If you can offer something else please post it so I can recheck your figures against mine.

You check yours. If TX has 2.86 million more kids than FL then it stands to reason that if TX has 6,800,000 more people total than FL then TX must have almost 4 million more 18+ year olds than FL, but TX still has 500,000 fewer of those 18+ year olds voting. Any way you look at it TX has MUCH lower voting turn out than FL. WHY??

The attempts to suppress voter turnout in FL, OH, and AZ in particular backfired. The old white men overplayed their hand. The minority communities were so riled up by what they at least perceived as an effort to take away their vote that they made it a point to vote no matter what even if they had to take a day off to obtain the ID then stand in line 3, 4, or 7 hours to vote. In the final analysis the blacks, Hispanics and under 30s voted in even larger numbers than in 2008 and in the case of the first two they voted even more strongly Obama. If you want to get somebody to stop doing something they really want to do the worst way to go about it is try to make it harder for them to do it.

Lets see, we have a guy scheduled to go on trial next year for fraud and money laundering but suddenly he is a trusted source for the left wing nuts? Now why doesn't that surprise me? He should switch to the Democrat Party where fraud and money laundering are resume enhancers, second only to getting Lewinskys, committing perjury and then being disbarred.
But I will agree with Archie on one note, blacks and Latinos came out in drives to vote for their so-called "free" stuff from Santa Claus and to feed their societal aspirations for affirmative action in the WH by giving an abject failure a gimme. But what I can't understand is what makes Florida so special in this regard? Georgia has early voting and Obama got waxed here. Early voting does not equate to more votes by the leeches. It's not like they have anything else to do on the first Tuesday in November but vote for their goodies. I would think early voting makes it easier for people that actually work and contribute to society to get to the polls. This claim makes no sense to me unless the precincts in which blacks and Latinos vote are so incompetently run that they can't get everyone in......oh, that's right, these precincts are run by Democrats so of course they are a train wreck.
Sounds like sour grapes to me from a guy indicted for federal crimes and not the confession of some saint whose conscience was really bothering him. GF, you really need to stop getting your news from left wing outlets that don't tell the whole story. This story and your feigned outrage is so funny.....

Sounds like the Texas turn-out was so low because they were all too busy working for a living and staying off welfare, then how do you explain the Alabama turn-out being 9% higher than Texas (about the same as Florida)? Are the people of Alabama so lazy and addicted to welfare they have the time to vote (mostly for Romney) instead of working? :-)

The final vote GA count shows Obama losing by 7.8%...not exactly a "waxing". If the democrats had poured the money into GA that they put in FL, NC, and VA it is very likely that margin could have been cut to 3% or 4%. I expect the Dems will target GA, AZ, MO and possibly SC and MT as swing states in 2016. If the Republicans do not see the light before 2016 the Democrats will have a lock on the White House at least through 2024. That would not be good for the Democrats, the Republicans or the country!
BTW: Talking about your fellow citizens as leeches is not the way to win friends and influence people

Greer funneled party money to a company called Victory Strategies that he controlled and concealed his relationship with, investigators said. On Greer's orders, the Republican Party of Florida paid Victory Strategies for campaign work, much of which was never performed. That was in addition to a 10 percent cut of major donations to the party that Greer took along with his top assistant, Delmar Johnson, Shepherd said. Greer got about $125,000 of the almost $200,000 that the party paid Victory Strategies, the statewide prosecutor said.
Victory Strategies also received money from a fund Greer had set up for his re-election campaign as party chairman, he added.

I could care less what the losers in this country think about what I think about them. I am not running for anything nor would I....I can't afford the pay cut. But they are losers, leeches and greedy and self centered and I am personally doing everything I legally can to prevent them from getting one more penny from me through the point of the gun.

Believe me, its the middle class that will be footing the bill for Obama, not me. That's one of the great things about being a 1%er. We know how to use the tax code to our benefit. Nope, me and Warren Buffett won't be footing this tax bill. Just the suckers that voted for TOTUS.
Oh, and I can assure you I am not angry. Sad for the country and resolute in my strategy to minimize my tax liability. And I don't regret one penny of the money I gave to Romney and other GOP candidates. Which by the way, Romney is the only one I supported that lost so it was money well spent.

At least those that sit in Board rooms actually create jobs and add value to the country. And besides Archie, you fall for the same fallacy as so many left wing nuts thinking that corporations pay taxes. A little economics lesson for you buddy, only individuals pay taxes. Some of those taxes are paid through corporations that pass on their burden to the consumer.
The leeches have intrinsic value as human beings but that's about it. Otherwise they are a drain on our society. That is why what we have is a culture problem where people like this do not pay a price for their laziness, self centeredness and greed. Its the culture Archie and left wing nuts are the ones causing the problem with their distorted societal aspirations.
