The more I watch and read about the so-called discussions between the WH and Congress the more I am convinced that Obama is not serious. To wit, he campaigned on raising taxes $900B but is now asking for $1.6T. He campaigned on reducing spending but he is now talking about "investing" in more government programs. He continues to meet in secret with disparate groups of lawmakers to discuss the fiscal cliff but does not include senior GOP leaders (i.e., see Jeff Sessions recent remarks as further evidence). He wants tax increases now and talks about cuts to occur later. The more I think about it the more I am starting to fall into the camp of those who believe the GOP should simply turn this mess over to Obama and Harry Reid and let them own it. They should all simply vote present and let the Democrats be responsible for the disaster that will follow. I realize this will have devastating consequences for the country but frankly elections have consequences and those that voted to return TOTUS to the WH and left Democrats in charge of the Senate deserve to experience those consequences. I feel sorry for the rest of us that tried to warn you but at this point it is simply not worth taking one bit of blame for what is going to happen. I don't any longer believe there is any desire for negotiation. They simply want to be able to lay part of the blame for their disastrous economic policies on the GOP. But hey, at least women have their access to contraception and abortion, hispanics have their hope of amnesty and blacks get someone whose skin color matches theirs regardless of the content of his character.

If they were to play Pontius Pilate on the Dems they'd need to do it smartly, else the Dems will figure out a way to turn the screws on them.

Here's my thinking on this because you know regardless of who is responsible Dems will blame the GOP and the govt media will be their usual sycophantic selves. But at least with simply voting present they will have plausible deniability for having any responsibility for the disaster. It won't make a difference with the left wing nuts because their ability to think critically was gone once they accepted the liberal ideology. But maybe, just maybe enough of those that voted for TOTUS and left Dems in charge of the Senate will make a mid-term correction and finally make Obama completely irrelevant his last two years in office. Its really our only hope at this point. Some sort of so-called compromise will still be a disaster and when it is, and even if they get 90% of they want Dems will claim it didn't work because of the obstructionism of the Republicans and the govt media will be their usual sycophantic selves. So I am starting to think, screw it. Let the guy have what he wants. The result will probably only be incrementally worse than some half-a$$ed compromise and at least it will be more challenging for them to blame the GOP.....not impossible....because we have already seen what can happen with the kind of electorate we have.......

I could not agree more ... the want Obama to step up and he will not put a proposal on the table.  He wants the GOP to propose something so he can go on the campaign trail again and bash the plan, but never put his own plan on the table other than higher taxes and higher spending.   So I say let everyones taxes go up and the mandatory cuts to take effect.  Yes it will be painful ... but that is what Obama agreed to ... so unless he wants to put a realistic proposal on the table, he can live with that ... then I feel the GOP should be speaking out loudly that it was the GOP that gave them the tax rates in the first place ... they want them for all, but Obama would not negotiate in good faith.
