From the Boston Globe

WHILE DOUBTLESS some temporary measures will be taken to avoid the worst consequences of the “fiscal cliff,” either before or after New Year’s, there is an issue that will have to be addressed on Jan. 3: the speakership.

The speaker of the House is a national figure, leader of the entire House, not just his or her party. As such, the speaker needs to forge agreement among the majority of House members to move along issues of national importance.

There is no doubt in my mind that moderate Republicans could work together with Democrats to forge truly historic reform. The Simpson-Bowles commission and its original plan clearly demonstrated that a bipartisan group could tackle big issues and come up with dramatic and balanced solutions.

Speaker John Boehner has shown himself incapable of leading the Republicans in the House, let alone the House as a whole. He has been unwilling to allow moderate Republicans to work with Democrats and has instead allowed the Tea Party to dictate policy, resulting in complete gridlock. It is impossible to imagine Tip O’Neill or any of the other great speakers allowing themselves to be pushed around in a similar way. Boehner is no leader.

It is time to nominate and elect a new speaker, one who understands how to lead.

GF......the
next thing you will "reveal' to us is that the Pres. is not playing with our economic well being, credit rating etc, with his fiscal cliff maneuverings so the Dems can take the House back in 2014. Why, if that happens with the help of the media like the Boston Glob it will just be a surprise............and it will be worth the damage it will have caused our economy so he can have a unified gov't again in order to finish his draconian agenda. DUH...........come on surprise me with something like you agree with the NRA approach to protecting our school children in school.

Gone Fishin, you like to highlight anything that supports your libtard agenda. Why not highlight someone like Senator Harry Reid who has not presented a budget in 4 years and prides himself by telling the House of Representatives he will not bring anything they present to a vote. We taxpayers have to endure his worthless approach to helping our country recover from 5 trillion dollars of debt created by Obama. If he had to perform in a real job in the public workplace he would have been "fired" years ago. Why do we have to tolerate public officials like him who do nothing but draw a salary and treat we citizens as imbeciles? If there was ever a public official who deserved to be "impeached", he would be at the top of the list. The majority of people in the workplace have to perform to a certain standard and are evaluated by their supervisors anually. If you don't meet the standards required you lose your job. I realize he is an elderly Senator who has been in the senate many years and that is where the bulk of the problem lies. He simply does as he pleases and shows no concern for "we the people" for whom our government is supposed to represent. He is employed because of "us" and someone needs to remind him of that. Enough said!!!!

What a coincidence!!!   I just turned on the TV and Senator Harry Reid stated that it was highly likely that we will go over the fiscal cliff. Reid said that the lack of progress of bipartisanship negotiations have stunted hopes of passing a deal by Dec. 31st. He is slamming Republicans for not raising taxes and says Rep. Boehner never should have let the House leave for Christmas. Senator Mitchell(Rep.) said they tried to resolve the extension Bush tax cuts in July but the only thing Democrats had time for was the upcoming election.

The real truth is neither side has really tried.

'neither side have really tried' seems true enough to me, when this hits the fan there will be enough blame to go around for everyone, regardless of their political stripes.   I do tend to think that the Tea Party has overplayed their hand, and in the aftermath of the fiscal cliff debacle will recede in influence.  But not before this damage is done.   I worry about the unforeseen economic & political consequences more than the ones that are predicted.    But the Speaker can't lead a GOP that is fractured into a hyper-conservative wing and a moderate core.   Eventually a movement like this splits off from it's parent group and tries to stand on its own.  I can't imagine how much longer the two parties can function as one, the Tea Party is as Puritan and condemning of dissent  as Cotton Mather.   That's not a political party, it's more like a political cult.

Bringing the governing process to a halt wasn't what the Tea Party wanted, but they certainly seem to have accomplished it.  Now we all may have time & opportunity to reflect on how useful their rhetoric was.  Too bad for us.  Especially too bad for those of us who are vulnerable to another Recession.

I find it in a way grotesquely amusing that you are laying so much of the blame on the Tea party when, if we did more of what they see as needed we would start climbing out of this fiscal he!! hole.

And I do not align myself with the Tea Party, but do believe in fiscal responsibility.  The Tea Party movement seems to be the only group in Government with ideas that will really fix the mess our children and grandchildren stand to inherit.

that jellyfish still can not think for himself and still just cuts and paste since he has never had an original thought to share.

There will be NO change in the speaker of the house.   The ONLY lack of leadership is in the whitehouse and leader of the senate.   Politics as usual.

You have a lot more confidence in the wisdom of the Tea Party's slash and burn approach to running the country than I do.
