What makes it so hard for liberals to see that the government can't borrow $.46 out of every dollar and not bankrupt the country.  We hear all the DemocRATS complaining about the money we spend on defense, but why do they fail to understand that we are financing China's army with the interest we are paying them on our national debt. If we are not smart enough to find a way to get the American people to see that we can't continue to raise the "debt level" as a way to solve our fiscal crisis, our country is right on track to become another Greece. It appears that is exactly what our so called "leader" has in store for the United States of America. Remember we have not had a budget in the four years under Obama's reign. Until we pass a "balanced budget" amendment we will never return to a "fiscal policy" that will let the United States survive as the "great" nation we have always been. It will never work when we have half the country depending on the other half to support our economy.  Even President Clinton saw the nesessity for our country to have a "balanced budget". Someone smarter than me needs to find a way to conduct a "simple" experiment with a group of people to determine how long they could survive when they are having to borrow $.46 of every dollar they spend. Why can people not understand that if a family that is borrowing $.46 of every dollar they spend will soon be "bankrupt" that a  government that is doing the exact same thing will also go "bankrupt".

I agree that the government can't spend more than it takes in revenue, although periodically it is necessary for any country, family, or corporation to 'borrow' money to fund itself.   Doing this overtime is not possible, nor fiscally responsible, I think.    The need for a balanced budget is, in my opinion, a position shared by both conservatives and liberals.      What else do you think we can agree on?

With the fact being that our Congressional leaders and constituents are so inept that they cannot solve our countries fiscal problems, our POTUS has found that now is the time to issue an executive order giving Congress a pay raise. Members of Congress now receive salaries about 3.5X the median wage of the private sector. There seems to be no end to the ways this President can find to spend "our" taxes. Just saw him on television continuing to say that he thinks a deal is near and, also found the need to remind everyone that he is the president for the next "four" years. What an arrogant XXX!!

You know we could go a little way toward solving some of our fiscal problems if every DemocRAT and every ReTHUGlican decided to never buy anything made in China...sure!!! Lets get real....the government needs to spend less in every field and it needs to increase revenue in a responsible way. Almost every economist, no matter where they are in the political spectrum, considers that as fact. The Republican mantra of "We have a spending problem, not a revenue problem" is BS. We have both spending and revenue problems. If we cut every dime of discretionary spending other than defense we would still have a deficit in the hundreds of billions. I don't know about you but I'm not willing to sell off Yellowstone, close the CDC and fire the FBI. Copperline is correct in the need to borrow on occasion. This nation has a crumbling and antiquated infrastructure which eventually MUST be addressed. When a private company borrows to modernize it is called "investment" but the T Party purists scoff when Obama uses the term related to infrastructure improvements or research or education spending. If you must borrow, and we in fact must, doesn't it make sense to do it when the interest rates are near 0%? If we could get adults in charge (people more interested in getting something done for the country than getting re-elected) we might finally get a reformed and simplified our tax structure, reformed budgeting (investment where needed and cuts where possible and responsible), and actual reform of entitlements. Until we replace the nut cases on both extremes with people who are willing to at least consider compromise, then we will for certain eventually fall off a REAL fiscal cliff!

Seems that both Liberals and Conservatives think that a significant number of our elected leaders are inept, & tending to take such extreme positions as to make their leadership & decision-making very poor.   And, we may all agree that giving a raise to a  Congress has been so inactive & indecisive doesn't seem right.

Maybe we even agree that any Congressman truly interested in reducing the expenses of  government should make a statement by refusing to take it.     We could agree that we have lost touch with the concept of "Statesman" in favor of a much less desirable "Politician" when we are selecting who we elect.

Still, we somehow have to be careful how we put financial pressure on the performance of these Legislators, or we could trend toward only wealthy people able to get elected & affording to live in Washington.

Copperline quote,

"Still, we somehow have to be careful how we put financial pressure on the performance of these Legislators, or we could trend toward only wealthy people able to get elected & affording to live in Washington."

Just what do you think is happening right now?  Those that aren't already wealthy are crooks that find it less challenging concerning jail time that being a crook.  That is how you spell "politician."

It's a puzzle to me whether we should pay Congressmen enough money to be relatively free from personal financial pressures (and hopefully less inclined to get in bed with special interests).. or whether we should keep their pay low and count on them to sacrifice for the privilege of serving the public interest .... counting on this to attract statesmen rather than politicians to public office.

I think we agree that Congress is not in touch with some of the same economic realities the rest of us are, and it would be better if they were.      The way they make their money, the retirement & healthcare plans they have, their ability to step back & forth between govt service & private industry, and their susceptibility to all sorts of powerful influences hoping to shape their leadership.... that's a pretty different set of circumstances from the rest of us.
