Rural White Voters Having Trouble Understanding the Election

Older, male, white voters are having a lot of trouble understanding the election results. They and everyone they knew just assumed that the country would never re-elect a tax-and-spend liberal. Fox News told them this was impossible. Now reality is beginning to kick in--things have changed and are not likely to go back to the way they used to be. They are also flummoxed by the voters accepting same-sex marriage and legalization of marijuana in some states. Many of them see the country as Mitt Romney does, with makers and takers and the takers are taking over.

This is a fundamentally different situation than in the past. Then, a loss was just a loss--maybe the other side had a better candidate or ran a better campaign. Even after George McGovern and Michael Dukakis' massive defeats, Democrats didn't think this was the end of the America that they had always known. It was simply a lost election and they could try again in 4 years. The difference now is probably that way back then, everyone watched one of the three television networks and read the same newspapers. Now it is possible to live entirely in a bubble of your own choosing and simply have no idea of what is really going on in the country. Someone who watches only Fox News and listens to talk radio and reads redstate.com on the Internet is going to be completely detached from reality, so an election result like this comes completely out of the blue for them. For Democrats, this is not true. Someone who watches only MSNBC, reads the New York Times and follows Websites like Huffington Post, Talking Points Memo, and Daily Kos, knew that it would be a fairly close election but that Obama and the Democrats had a small, but consistent, lead. The electoral vote predictors at all those places as well as here were pretty close to the final result. The new reality is that when you hide in a virtual cave of your own making, emerging out into the sunshine can be frightening.

Because she can do a fist bump with the rest of her 25 year old friends when they leave their Mom's basements to meet at the Starbucks.  There, they can chant "Obama, Obama", and make fun of the people who are in a rush because "they have to go to work or school".  They know in their hearts that the Government will feed, shelter and protect them from harm...

What research did they rely on? What are the sources of their opinions......because this isn't factual nor is it journalism. This is someone's opinion and I can assure you that it is mostly ill informed. You like this article because it reinforces your own prejudiced view of a certain demographic. I am betting this came from HuffnPuff post, daily kos, pmsnBS or one of the other left wing outlets. But please provide the source, who is the author, what did they base this on, etc. Let us make our own judgment about the validity of this opinion piece because there is no reason to believe it is either true or accurate. I can assure you that many conservatives didn't think Obama would be reelected because he was an abysmal failure both domestically and internationally, that his signature legislative achievement (Obamacare) was and still remains wildly unpopular, that he created trillion dollar deficits and spent hundreds of billions on pork filled stimulus to no good effect, that a large majority of Americans believed and continue to believe that the country was on the wrong track, that our best days were behind us and that the next generation for the first time ever will be worse off, etc., etc. etc. There were copious very valid and legitimate reasons to believe that Obama would not be reelected that unlike the gross misharacterization by this mystery guaranteed to be liberal author were neither ill-informed nor a result of some presumed insular perspective. Considering all these circumstances it doesnt exactly take a rocket scientist liberal to think it was going to be a close election and truly the only wonder is why anyone on the left is not surprised and shocked that he won, not the other way around. And it is entirely legitimate to presume that one reason is people voted for what they assumed would be free stuff paid for by the so-called rich. Well, just look at the comments on democratundergound as all these leftists are suddenly expressing shock and dismay that their paychecks have gotten smaller. They actually believed the tripe fed them by Obama and the govt media and now it is too late. Elections have consequences and yes, you can bet I am going to tell them I told you so in 2012. This is especially true for the youth vote that will one day in their middle age find themselves wondering why their middle class tax rates are over 50% while the govt is telling them the benefits their parents enjoyed that they voted for will not be there for them. I only hope I am still around to remind them that they voted for it and us insula, white guys warned them but they were just too smart to listen to us. You can spread the manure that you think smells good, but it is still manure.

Also there was blatant  voter fraud in Pennsylvania, Florida and Ohio. Acorn did not just go away. They went underground. In places Florida had from104% to 157% voter turnout, all for Oboma. In 57 precincts of Pennsylvania  there was not one vote for Romney. This in an area where some 45,000 turned out for a campaign appearance.
Romnet did not lose a state that had voter I D. He did not win a single state with out it!  There are many, many examples of this to anyone willing to look it up.

Casey, You don't need to keep worrying about the old guys. (They are old , right?) How much longer can can their archaic bodies and minds survive? Now that the tide has changed and your ideas are not just prevalent, but predominant, utopia is not far behind. You deserve only the best, so never settle for less (less means anything that doesn't make you happy)

Of course no answer from Casey on the source of this piece of garbage opinion piece masquerading as journalism.  Just like Archie's OMB numbers.......

But it draws the wrong conclusion.  Your...oops, its characterization of conservatives is completely wrong.  We don't have our heads stuck in the sand as the article...whoever wrote it...would have one believe.  Instead we conservatives are painfully aware of what the future holds.

To think that anyone can watch MSNBC and consider it journalism is laughable.  I watch occasionally to see what the other side is saying and they are about as unprofessional as it gets.

Unfortunately, Obama bought the election with our tax dollars and borrowed money that our legacy will have to pay.  Despicable in my mind, but then what is one to expect from a cheap, but  successful two bit Chicago politician?

To repeat, Obama didn't win the election he bought it.  If you love that you will get your utopia of mediocrity when the piper eventually puts his or her hand out and says:  "Pay up".  The bills will be due and someone will have to pay them.  Oh, and by the way don't think it will be the rich.  Even if they didn't have smart accountants who are masters of lawfully reducing taxes and paid the full rate, there still wouldn't  be enough money to support your messiah's spending habits.

Crow now, and eat crow later.

how so many of you continue to refuse to face the facts because you are so PO'd the facts turned out as they did.  You lost!!  Get over it.  The citizens of America rejected the T-party agenda, the far right evangelical agenda and the corporatist agenda.  Take those away and there ain't much left of the Republican agenda.

Now as for that massive voter fraud some of you (one in particular) continue to spout...show us the verifiable evidence that of any precinct that had over 100% turn out with every vote for Obama or shut up!!

You keep talking about the Right being angry, PO'd and so forth, while you are the one who can't seem to stand the fact that we still have our values, our opinions, and our facts..  You are acting like a petulant child.

These points shouldn't be dismissed so quickly.   Whites ARE having a hard time accepting the re-election of a Black man to the Presidency, the evidence of that is right here in on the forum.

And the demographics of the electorate are shifting, too.   White people are now a smaller population than the combined non-white citizens.   Every historian and politcal analyst would agree that this will be a development to watch and examine.

But I'm not certain that this election and this period of a Democratic Presidency is anything like a sea change in American Politics.   The election was just too close for any side to have claimed a total endorsement of it's agenda.   it was, however, an endorsement of Obama's proposals over Romney's .....much to the regret of that segment of the American populace that Casey is talking about.

Please cite your empirical evidence (not your gut feel) that "Whites ARE having a hard time accepting the re-election of a Black man to the Presidency, the evidence of that is right here in on the forum."

First, since forum identities are anonymous, how do you know who is white and who is non-white?

But more importantly on what do you base your OPINION that whites are having a hard time?  Please cite examples.  Are you so smart that you know what people are THINKING?  Didn't think so.

I will be the first to state that I am a white man, and that I am far, far more concerned with this person in the White House who wants to fundamentally change our country when I, for one, don't want it fundamentally changed unless for the good.  I see nothing good in this ultra liberal, scialist leaning person and his agenda.  It has nothing to do with the fact that he is black, or more correctly half black.

And get off this white vs black thing because that dog don't hunt.  I supported Herman Cain until it was futile, as he was unfairly railroaded out for something that would be a liberal's resume-enhancer,  And I find Allen West to be exceptionally knowledgable in history and able to relate that history to current events.  Unfortunately for him, he has a tendency to let his tongue get ahead of political correctness.  Not that I find that bad, it just won't let him get very far when every Republican has to be perfect and Democrats' failings are swept under the rug or otherwise ignored.

So where's the evidence?  What brought you to that conclusion?

MrHodja,

You know liberals don't need any emperical data to make a decision.  If they say it, the evidence is nonessential and it's automatically a fact.

Copper, I could give a rats behind about the color of Obama's skin. I detest his politics, his big government mentality and his hatred of what makes this country great. I also detest Biden's political beliefs and he is an old, white Catholic man. And I detest Hillary's political views and she is an old female WASP. And I detest Hollywood's fascination with their failed ideology and they come in all stripes, genders, sexual orientations, etc. Cut the crap about racism because it is patently false. It's usually Archie projecting his racism on us and it is as intellectually vacuous as liberalism writ large. You need to get over your inherent racism that sees every objection to Obama in racial terms. It has nothing to do with it. Keep the focus on the issues and don't let the race baiters pull you in.

I was hoping for 16 days of common sense but as soon as you show up Copper reverts from being open minded and reasonable to accusing everyone that opposed Obama's failed leftist ideology of being racists. What is it about you north Georgia rednecks that does that?!?!? As for your comments about us getting over the election, did you read the first post? Do you even understand the context of this discussion or you just driving by after eating too many oysters? None of us have any doubt that Obama won. Nor do we doubt why. But our surprise he won is not only totally reasonable but apparently shared by the left. But for inexplicable reasons our surprise means we are uninformed but the left's is somehow erudite and well informed. This apparently represents for liberal intellect these days.....it's no wonder you believe so much that just isn't so. Do us a favor Archie, help us keep the collective IQ above room temperature by staying on vacation. Casey drives by, drops some mindless crap and then slinks back into the dark, wet place where he or she belongs. Don't hesitate to do likewise.........

OK, whoa.  I wasn't calling anyone a racist.   If I wanted to say that I would have been more direct.   I do think that some writers here are unduly freaked out byObama.  And I hear lots of white people suspecting he was UnAmerican(birthers),  non-Chrisitian, etc. Many of the accusations  in the past year have looked, well.......... racial.

Sorry if I was misunderstood.

Don't know how many non-whites are on this forum, I'd like to hope there are a few and that we'd get more diverser in the future..   But I'm fairly confident that the current frequent flyers on this forum are white middle aged males.  Call it a gut feeling.

Your problem is that like most liberals you don't tolerate opinions other than yours.

And yes, you keep coming back, unsuccessfully attempting to prove the conservative element of the forum wrong...and fail miserably which just makes you try harder.

Ever heard of the Serenity Prayer?
