Had an email exchange this morning with a DC-based former colleague in the defense industry. In that exchange I asked him what effect they are feeling in the DC area from the sequestration threat. Its a bit long, but here is his response: "The sequestration, when it happens, will only have a minor effect here: IF you consider minor the 20% pay cut to our Government customers, IF you consider minor the many defense companies being put on the brink of bankruptcy, IF you consider minor the 25-30% furloughs for the Defense Industry across the country, and lastly IF you consider minor that Congress is fiscally-supportive of major tax increases simultaneous with massive defense cuts that threaten our ability to control the seas. No grief here – fear describes it much better. I have 6-8 great years left in me, haven’t had one unpaid day off in 43 years and expect to be furloughed next month. I could almost afford to retire before the taxes went up. I guess now I’ll become part of that 43% of irrelevance in this country. Sorry for the downer message – life will go on, just not as we know it now – accept less while paying more for it. F’n Congress will just continue to kick the can down the road, sell this as a necessary recovery adjustment from the debt crisis – meanwhile their golden years are protected with generous lifetime annuities after serving one term in office. I guess I’m just a dying breed that needs to be swept under the carpet – I didn’t vote for the uncontrolled immigration, gay legislation, government corruption, females in combat (I go to Bethesda twice a month and mourn the hundreds of 19-year old men cycling through there with missing arms and legs with massive head trauma – call me old fashioned, but I’d prefer our daughters be spared from this.), the three generations of Hispanics living in and renting the house next door to me in what was a perfect up-scale neighborhood, a country where the loudest or weirdest minority gets total amnesty for their abhorrent behavior, uncontrolled texting while driving and women drivers!!!! I really am against only the truly bad drivers – there are plenty of men who drive poorly. Lastly, what really ticks me off is I can’t even say a perfectly good F word when it’s justified or the LAN police (mostly of whom are high all day long) will block my email. Is this a great country or what?" Can my friend be Ben Carson's running mate?

MrH:  I am having a hard time believing any of this.  Even with sequestration, the budget goes up by $15 billion from 2012 so there are no cuts. The govt will spend more in 2013 than 2012, way more than 2011 and incredibly more than in 2008!   And the defense budget was cut over $40 billion last year and for the next 10 years with nary a peep from anyone.  But now all of the sudden with a projected $22 billion cut in 2013 the world is coming to an end. It strains all credibility and even some in the govt media are calling BS on this and rightly so.  In fact, it was either Tom Coburn or Daniel Inoye that said all they need to do is free up the agencies to move funds around and there would be no impact from sequestration (said bill is beling blocked by Harry Reid.....no surprise).  And as Bobby Jindel said, all we need to do is delay Obamacare and we save over $80 billion a year.

To the extent people lose their jobs it is because they are being singled out for political gain and not because of these cuts per se.  And as for this 20% pay cut, because of the lousy Obameconomy, my income has been cut by way more than 20% in the last two years.  A significant number of my overhead employees have been cut to 4 days per week to save on costs.  Frankly, it is about time for those that rely on the federal government to feel some of the same pain those in the private sector have been experiencing for the last several years.  Maybe they too will realize what a failure Obama is.

And because of the lousy economy, I just had to lay off my IT director who also has a young family and pregnant wife and it breaks my heart but I needed to do it to keep the bankers happy.  And the response of Obama is to spend his time campaigning, laying off his jobs council, etc.  I am sorry, but if you rely on the federal government for your living you are going to be subjected to the vagaries of politics.  Considering Washington, DC has been totally immune to the lousy economy it is about time that they get some of the same sauce.

And I still remember quite vividly three years ago at the annual CEO conference for our industry listening to all the firms serving the private sector talk about how tough times were while the CEO's serving the federal govt were crowing about record revenue and profits.  Fair enough, but am I supposed to cry over some furloughs when we have been dealing with this and much worse for years, especially when I know it is pure politics?  Considering what we in the private sector have been through I cannot come up with the emotional energy to care.  I spent it all laying off and reducing the salary of my own employees.  And by the way, unlike the federal govt which will spend more money this year even with the sequestration our revenues are off 30%.

I don't buy what this guy is saying about taxes. "I could almost afford to retire before the taxes went up." The taxes went up for those earning over $400,000 and he can't retire? Give me a break. I don't understand why the big issue about cutting the budget. That is what the right wants and I agree. Time to cut as MM says, but for me, just leave my entitlements alone.

Perception in the eyes of the perceiver is fact. One sector of my company just recently sent out 3500 layoff notices. I think...no, I am danm sure that if the DoD services and agencies being cut were allowed to choose HOW to cut (which you promote), there wouldn't be nearly so much wailing and gnashing of teeth. 8itching, yes, but I can assure you the services would find ways to cut that didn't involve a 20% reduction in pay for their civilain work force. Meanwhile we await the releae of a Request for Proposals to enhance a service system (we are the incumbent) - an enhancement that will save nothing. We will respond, as businesses do, in order to gain the work in spite of its seeming low place on the toem pole.

Therein lies the problem with government.  It does nothing efficiently and that inefficiency is laid off on private sector firms that in my experience do most of the real work for government anyway.

It is hard to listen to complaints from people living in DC about furloughs and layoffs when you look at what the rest of the country has been dealing with for four years and is looking at for years to come.  Maybe now they will realize what the rest of us in flyover country already know, their beloved, dear leader is an impostor and failure.

Not any more. She worked for EPA Region 4 in Atlanta from 1989 to 1998 or so.

Strap on a set and tell me who you are via email (you know who I am) and I might change my mind. Until you do that you are an unmitigated coward and I'm not interested in anything you have to say.
