In the market for a used pickup about 2008 thru 2010. Mid-size if possible. In looking on-line at both dealer sites and private sales, a Toyota Tacoma 2008 runs maybe $20,000 up with 80K miles on it. Meanwhile a similarly equipped 2008 Ford Ranger with 15K miles is at about $12,000. Big difference.
Are Toyotas really that good or Ford really that bad??

I would believe that the numbers reflect the trucks' relative worth. I do know the full size Ford pickup lasts a long time - we have an Expedition, which is an F-150 with a box on top instaed of a cab. It currently has 168,000 miles on it and is still in fine shape. Have never been over-impressed with the mid-size. Don't really know anything about Toyota trucks but we have had several Camrys in the family and you simply can't kill them. My son absolutely trashed the body of an 84 Camry, and when he finally killed the body at abot 200K miles the engine was still purring like a kitten. Frankly, if it were me I'd buy the Toy, even at the higher price. But advice when no money on the line is...well...cheap.

My wife has a 2006 Toyota Sienna mini-van and it has been a great vehicle. Personally, I think the used Tacoma's are over priced. I have a 2002 Ford Sport-Trac(second owner) truck and I have been well satisfied. Used ones are kind of hard to find, but you might check around.

There is good reason that Ford trucks have been #1 year after year.  They would not risk their reputation or market leadership position.

Toyota is good, Ford is better, and I would never buy GM now that it is still Government Motors and has publically said that their future is based on growth in China ... this is after they used American peoples tax dollars to save them.   So they take that money and invest it in growth in China.

Obama talks about penalizing businesses for moving jobs overseas, yet says nothing about the bailout of GM and how they used the money.   Ford never took a bailout and they are now my car company.

The tundra is noisey and gets as bad if not worse gas mileage as fords. Its a pretty bad statement when a dealership wont change spark plugs on they're own product until after warranty expires!

Here are some decent reviews. I would not pay $20,000 for a used smaller truck. Go to Snappy Auto hiway 49 just outside Dadeviile and speak to owner Claude. He recently bought one of the last new Rangers. He will give you an honest opinion.

I can't speak to recent Rangers, but my 2001 sure enough had to have a new trans just as so many complained about em (around 135,000 miles).  I bought a used trans from up north and put it in.  No problems since.

Ford may be coming out with the F100 again. Unless you just gotta have something now, I'd wait, even if it were a year, for that model to be introduced again. Mileage is superior to the Rangers/smaller trucks, greater carry weight, etc.  No idea cost, but suspect new to be less than that 20k you looking at for a Toy.

I had the best PU I ever had, a 98 Ford 150 fully loaded.  Inline 6 motor with cool down blower.  Sold it still running at 325,000 miles when I downsized and bought that used Ranger 4 years ago. Still a Ford man.
