everyone is all excited and ready for this years honey from where ever your favor source may be. I am thinking middle of june or so before any honey may be extracted. I will add honey supers to my hives as soon as the nectar flow starts which should be around May 1. The bees are out and about and excited that winter is over as well as we are...

I split my hives a March 20th as I did last year. This means I took 4 frames of eggs, honey & pollen and moved the frames and some bees to a smaller hive (Nuc) and then added a new queen to the Nuc. After about a week I relocated them into a full size hive and with proper feeding they have done well.

I had the honor a few weeks back of teaching 4 - 2nd grade classes about bees. I took a empty hive, frames, top and all of my tools (including my bee suit) into the class and we talked about the life of a bee, the 3 different types of bees that live in a hive, and what job each bee has within the hive. It was a lot of fun and believe me when I say "Those kids are some kinda smart".

I will post an update soon as the bees start storing honey in the honey supers...Anyone interested in starting up your own hive contact the Sugahatchee Beekeepers Association in Opelika.

    Have a great weekend.
