I have never carried boat insurance and wonder what is covered by those that have it. Are you concerned about liability? Damage by others to your boat? Why do you have it?

That's a little scary. Buy insurance, for us, if not for yourself.

Liability is everything. You could spend the rest of your life paying off a small incident. Insurance is cheap.

Our insurance is $87 a year on a 24 foot pontoon with a 90 hp motor.  Very cheap in the event that it is ever needed.  I couldn't imagine NOT having insurance.

Yes, liability. A distant second is protection for your boat, but there are so many ways you can become liable for damage to another's boat or property, orr worse, their person. I certainly wouldn't want to pay for that out of my pocket. Insurance is a cheap way to ensure I don't have to do that.

OK you guys have convinced me....I am not the typical weekend, holiday boater. I am only on the lake 3 or 4 days midweek and that is infrequently. All the idiots (or at least folks acting like idiots) I see on the water has kept me away from the busy times of lake traffic.
Nonetheless, I am going to get insurance today.

Thanks for your responses.

Alabama has said the state will start verifying proof of insurance for water craft before issuing tags sometime this year.

for insurance.  We do have insurance on it though.  I however did have to show proof of insurance on the cars before they would renew my tag and had to provide them with drivers license number of the person who the car was registered to.
