trying to rid myself of COMLINK; dish is offering me package at lake of 200 channels, including golf for $39.99/month 1st year--then goes to $64.99; I have never had satellite but hear both pros & cons--would welcome comments before I jump ship

I have directv at home and charter at the lake.  stuck with charter because it is include with my HOA dues.  directv is much better in my opinion, and I have had dish in the past and it is comparable.

what is difference between: dish network & direct TV; ?

I've had dish for years (also had Direct at one point). When comparing either to comlink, it's a no brainer. I love satellite TV. I suggest the Dish Hopper system, but get the 722DVR at a minimum.

i would be going through Windstream since I have internet//phone through them; a bundle would be $100/month, saving me $45/mo + I get rid of that un-customer friendly Comlink; do I have a choice of the options you mentioned ?

you should have those options. You can bundle any of the dish packages with Windstream, but it will effect price. For me, high definition and a DVR are a must for TV viewing. I think the Hopper is the best thing on the market for DVR (all things considered), but the 722 is adequate and will give good DVR service, high def to one TV and standard def to another.

I've gotta go the other way. Had dish in town and HATED it! Went out with the slightest rain storm or wind. Costs more than charter at the lake. My charter Internet is smoking fast and I've always gotten very good customer service. One thing about charter though. They will raise the price every year. But just call them up and threaten to,leave and they are eating out of the palm of your hand. Peace, <>< TC

If you don't have Windstream them what internet service would you use.  In Hoover if you go with Dish, etc they send you to AT&T which is bad enough to stay away from Dish.  I have Charter and it is pretty good tv, fast internet  but I still don't like them.

Tom, there must have been some problems with your dish placement or alignment for it to go out that often. Ours will go out for a few minutes during very heavy rains, but it it rare. I did have a similar problem to yours at my GA house where we weren't getting the perfect allignment and they installed a second dish pointed at a different satellite. With 2 dishes pointed at 2 different satellites, l almost never lose signal. At the lake house, there is only one dish and I made the installers work for peak alignment. I believe many installers will quit when they get a signal in the green band, but if they spend some time tweaking the alignment they can improve it by a significant margin.

AT&T has a service offering called U-Verse, which includes Hi-Bit-Rate(300Mbs?) internet, 500 channel HDTV, VOD, VOIP Telephone, VCR, ABC,, XYZ etc, etc. Very competitive with Cable offerings.
The problem is availability in AT&T areas as well as non-ATT areas. Requires fiber optics extended closer to your home and electronics.
Therefore, if you are served at home or at the lake by ATT, start calling/badgering them to offer the service in your area. Technology is about 4 years old and now mature. Check it on-line UVerse.

I have Charter in B'ham, and have had Charter on the lake for about 20 years. I got tired of playing let's make a deal every 6 months and with them going all digital making you rent a box for every tv in your house was the last straw. I now have Direct with the Genie which is great, saving me about $800 a year over Charter. Here is a little trick to get your premium Chanel's if you have a second home. I purchased a Sling Box from Best Buy which connects to your home cable DVR box and you can get all your programs sent to your over the Internet anywhere you are in the world ( such as the lake). You can use an iPad or iPhone using Apple TV to use your HD sets at the lake. I use a Sony Internet device to watch my tv from home on my HD here at the lake. You can do all the functions on your lake controlling your tv at home, record, playback, pause etc. I hope this has thrown a new option into your choice of TV cable selections.

you can also use a slingbox with your Dish. I have watched what is on at home when I have been out of the country and also watch anything that I have recorded on the DVR.

Just had mine installed yesterday. Harrison owns this business and has installed for over 30 years. I got 3 TVs on the 200 channel package with Internet also and its $106/month. It was worth every penny to walk up to Charters counter and hand them there box back...

I reccomend Lake Martin Sats (825-9939) because your not dealing with a young kid that only wants a paycheck. You are dealing with someone who really cares about providing service.

I have the dish app and from my cellphone anywhere/anytime I can look at the guide and record anything I want. Its great!!!

Thanks Harrison for a job well done...

Tony, did you get the slingbox?

I second everything Tony said about Harrison and his company.  Straight up good guy and does excellent work.  I have gone straight to him on a couple of issues instead of calling Dish and he got me hooked up on going in a hurry.

I like him so much I even forgave him for setting me up with HughesNet, that turned out to be a nightmare.  Horrible company with horrible service.  I actually sued them and got a 3k judgement against them.  Stay away from HughesNet.

Swapped to DISH this summer and gave up Commlink.  Very happy with the change!

Altho this thread is a few months old, I used it to help make my decision to go with Dish, using Lake Martin Satellites.  I'm very happy with the outcome, mostly because I can fire Charter.  Excede internet is a bit slower than Charter, but still very functional, the TV lineup is nearly all HD, very good pix, and with the recent weather, we never lost a signal.  Harrison is the best, I highly recommend him and his company.  I also went with ITP VoIP which works very well, too.  Thanks to all who gave opinions, it helped.
