Have a new pup and want to get an invisible containment fence to keep him at home.  I have looked online at different options, but wanted to see if anyone had suggestions.  Nothing I can find will give him the freedom to take a dip in the lake, or sit on the dock with everyone else. My lot is wooded, and sloped.  I have almost every "problem" they mention on youtube sites.  Has anyone else experienced this when trying to "fence in" your dogs, and if so, what did you go with and how does it work?

Fwiw, have used them in the past. If your dog is aggressive or even just "hunt" oriented (ie, beagle, spaniel, etc) I would expect it to cross the fence line when seeing a deer, etc. Mine was effective most of the time, but not even close to foolproof.

Murph,
I have had invisible fence for about 17 years at several locations. Have trained about ten dogs (and the secret is not the shock of the fence but the training that safety is always behind them toward the center of the yard). I have trained two pretty aggressive dogs that would not bolt. I also have the fence at Lake Martin and it goes out into the water so that the dogs can swim but only so far from the dock. Never had a problem.  e-mail me and I will give you my two cents worth.

Just remember the electric fence will keep your dog in but won't keep other dogs out.

Hi there-
We have two Golden Retrievers who LOVE the water. We have an invisible fence just installed about 3 months ago by Dogwatch out of Montgomery ( whom I highly recommend ) We have a sloped (steep lot) yard and about 280 feet of water front. They have been given access to the water near the dock. What they do is sink the wire into the lake so it does not shock your dog. He can make the area you want them to have access to as big or small as you want. My dogs learned about the fence very quickly.. and we keep it on level 3 -- it goes as high as 10 I think.

One of them has figured out when he does not have on the collar he can go where he wants -- the other one - not as bright-- won't EVER go past a certain area. The collar warns them before they get buzzed so they learn by hearing the sound-- and then running toward the center of your yard or toward your house.  It's not a hard process. I trained with my dogs about 20 minutes a day for three days and they understood it pretty quick.

Watch your pup though--  mine like to chase ducks and swim nearly across the lake to the other side (as if they could catch them) until I yell for them to come back.
