When you lose your dog… when you find a dog… here is what you MUST do! Notify the nearest animal shelter and ALL of the local veterinarians.  Give the following information:
* The breed of the dog (mixed breeds: tell them it is a mix and the closest breed that it looks like).
* The color of the dog
* The weight of the dog
* If lost:  The dog does/does not have a chip
* If lost:  The dogs name (this is important… dogs respond to their name)
* Where you lost/found the dog
* Your contact information.

If the veterinarian has an email address, send an email which includes a picture.

Most folks who lose their dog begin to despair immediately. After a few days, they expect only miracles. After a few weeks, sad resignation sets in.

Miracles can be assisted. “Jackson” was missing since the 4th of July (ran away from fireworks). His owners lived in another state. Jackson’s mate missed him. He was a rescue dog and very timid so his owners really had little hope of seeing him again. BUT, they took the recommended steps (above).  This picture is Jackson being re-united with his owners AFTER THREE WEEKS and miles from where he was lost!

Here is another tip for folks with dogs that are stressed by fireworks.  Call your vet and explain that your dog runs, hides, shivers and shakes, or even runs off during fireworks and ask for some 'doggie downers'.  I am not sure what the chemical is but it is very effective and takes a lot of stress off of the animal.  My current and last two were all freaked our by fireworks, gunshots, and even loud thunder.  I have been treating them with the doggie downers for years and it really make a difference.  I usually get a weeks supply leading up the the 4th and that will actually last all years most times.  I will only use them for thunderstorms on rare occasions.  When you call the vet be sure you know the weight because that is how they determine dose.

One simple little pill most likely would have stopped Jackson from running off.  Just a tip for next year.

Most likely "ace", or acepromazine. i definitely could be wrong on the drug's spelling, but our vet gives it to us for our part-Lab who had parvo as a pup, and, because of the significant number of treatment trips (and cost!), is violently fearful of trips to the vet. Update: i guessed right on the name. A link to the Wikipedia description is below.

We always train our dogs to a kennel. When the noise starts that's where he goes..his "safe" house.

I would suggest that you include on a name tag... only your last name and telephone number. Never include the dogs name so that someone who is trying to steal the dog will not know the dog's name.

Here's a tip that should be at the top of list if you value your pet.  Research Tagg Pettracker on the internet.  Each unit is about $90.  The service is $7.99/month for one unit and 99 cents/month for each additional.  Works any where in the country there is a Verizon signal.  I have them on my two dogs and they work great with smartphone app.  This is a cheap price to pay to always know where those pets are.
