While exploring the lake by boat I went to the hwy 49 bridge in Blue Creek. The bridge looked too low to go any further. However, I could see several houses east of the bridge. How do the people east of the bridge access the lake? Do they restrict themselves to a certain size boat? What's located there?
It looked like a nice area.

I've wondered the same thing. Rumor has it that if you tie your boat up at the docks near the bridge, you might come back from dinner to see you boat is floating off. I think they belong to the condos in the area. I doubt it's true, but I'm not taking any chances. I'm with you, any thoughts about how customers enjoy the restaurants in the area by boat would be appreciated. I think this is the area where Cat's shop is located, he might know.

Some boats can get through but many cannot, especially at full pool. There are lots of houses but unless you have a boat that can get under the bridge the lake can be pretty small.

Most of those docks by the bridge are private and associated with the condos...I'm guessing that if someone came home from a day on the lake and found a boat in their slip, that boat has a chance of floating away (especially if its an ongoing problem for the folks that live there).

All the docks there are private and yes,,, the condo owners push boats from the slips if people park in them. I know several folks who own condos there and it is a big problem for them. Common sense ain't so common anymore!

We have a home on the east side of 49 bridge. You are correct, it is a great location. The people we purchased our lake home from bought a home on the water in the Stillwaters area, they recently called me and said they wished they would have stayed on the east side of the bridge as the water in their aread is nearly to choppy to enjoy a swim and/or water sports.
The only boats that can't make it under the 49 bridge at full pool (which is typically one 2-3 weeks out of the year...this year is not typical) are larger Tri-toons, boats with hard bimini tops that can't be folded down, or larger sleeper/cruiser type boats. All other boats can get under the bridge with no problem (but it's our little secret so don't tell anyone).
Also, I hear one of the best 4th of July fireworks shows on the lake is on the east side of the bridge.

On my way to CAT's ramp close to Nick's (RIP) one day I took my pontoon boat under the bridge. The water was about 489, maybe half a foot lower, and I had to lay the bimini completely flat, move the anchor light to a horizontal position, even remove the plastic "windscreen" from the captain's console...and kneel on the deck as I went under. Had to wait until there wasn't another moving boat within a quarter mile, because the least little ripple would have caused the boat to bounce against the bridge concrete.
Now the typical pontton boat sits fairly high, but with the water hovering at 489.5/489.6 I would venture a guess that about the only thing that would go under it would be a low slung bass boat or jon boat. Would be interested in hearing from those who do live east of the bridge. What will go under it?
Update: Just read PikeSki's post. Hmmm...would a typical open bow ski boat make it?

If you ever pay attention to the bridge as you go under it, you will never want to go over it again!! It is in really bad shape. Back in the late 80's or so, our benevolent politicians got a report on about 75-80 bridges (can't remember exact number) that were in poor shape and a threat for catastrophic failure. Politicians being what they are immediately set about using that scare tactic to increase the gasoline tax by 5 cents. One of the most remarkable propaganda ploys was of course, "think of the children crossing these unsafe death traps on school buses". They made grandiose promises of all the new bridges complete with spectacular architectural drawings of most. Coincidentally there didn't seem to be a single area of the state that didn't have one of these bridges. That was important because the new tax had to go to statewide vote for approval. The HWY 49 bridge was on the list. It was to be replaced by a beautiful raised bridge that all boats would go under. Of course property values skyrocketed on the east side and a lot of new development sprung up.
Well politicians being what they are, the ink was barely dry on the ballots when they put out a 'revised' list. Revised all the way down to about a dozen or so. Once again, coincidentally I'm sure, it seems the most unsafe bridges were all near where the most powerful politicians called home. So here we are 25-30 years later still paying the nickel a gallon tax, and children still crossing these death traps in school buses all over the state.

Our house is also on Blue Creek east of the Hwy 49 bridge. We have a 19' open-bow boat with a wakeboard tower that folds down, and we are able to go under the bridge with no problem as long as the tower and bimini top are down. I have seen some fairly large boats including pontoons go under the bridge this summer, though it is probably a pretty tight fit. Certainly larger boats may have a problem at or near full-pool, but that actually keeps that part of the lake fairly quiet.

Yes, I have a 21 ft Malibu and we go under the 49 bridge with no problems. I have a few freinds on the east side of the bridge who have 24 ft ski boats (bow riders), deck boats, pontoons (not tri-toons), cigarette boats, waverunners, bass boats, etc. Again, this is when it is full pool as it is now. When the water goes down a foot or two most other boats (tri-toons, cruisers) can get under also.
Love this area.

The bridge is to low to get anything under it except for a small canoe. The bridge is also dangerous and may collapse, The water is extremely shallow pass the bridge so anything over a 5 horsepower outboard may ground out. There is nothing to eat on this side of the bridge unless you are fortunate enough to live here or know someone who does
.Have fun on the west side.

Since you also live on this august side of the highway 49 bridge let's not mention the Baron Bridge NESSIE. She has no problem running down the canoes with 5 horsepower motors.

Our first place was on the east side of the bridge. Bought our used pontoon from Sonny Fomby to make sure that it would actually make it under the bridge and into Blue Creek. It was a special treat to go under the bridge for our kids and newbys. Went on to add a Small Searay Runabout with a tower that we lowered to pass with no problem. There was always a great feeling of comfort to cross under 49 to get back home especially one of the 4th of July's that we ventured out. Great memories.
