Who uses Sprint at the lake?

The whole area is considered roaming, but the Sprint map shows good roaming coverage. I'm interested in Data speeds (do you get 3G?) and overall talk and text experience. Since Sprint uses a CDMA network, I'm thinking their roaming agreement is with Verizon for the Lake Martin area.

I don't have Sprint on my phone but do have a 3G/4G card for my work PC. No bars, zero coverage, does not roam, does not work.

Aren't Sprint and AT&T the same? If so I can tell you the AT&T phone I had was the worst I ever had. Had to drive a mile from the house to get a signal.

Sprint and ATT are totally separate and use incompatible networks. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA networks. Sprint does not cover the lake area, but with their unlimited everything plan they have a roaming agreement that does cover the lake area (probably Verizon CDMA)....I would assume the plan discussed above in not under that roaming agreement. We've had friends visit (that use sprint) and their phones worked fine at my house, but I'm looking for other sprint smartphone customers (that use the lake on a regular basis) for feedback of their experience.

You are looking for a way to avoid contact - they are the ones to go with. My wife's work Blackberry gets two kinds of signals - weak and none. At the cabin (Sandy Creek) service is marginal, at the south side of Young's Island - 1 bar if she stands up and holds the phone to the sky in her best Ultraman imitation... At the house - between B'ham and T'town, Verizon/Straight Talk we see 3 - 4 bars, for Sprint - her work gave her an Airave that hooks to our router to give her reliable cell service. If you are within eyesight (not line of sight) of a tower and don't move you are OK.

There was a tread on here a few weeks ago about pageplus.I have been with verizon for over 10 years and my contract was up.I went with page plus and am on the verizon network,55.00 a month on my iphone 4 with 3 g service and 2gbs.no taxes.It is working great for me,less money and same service.Just a thought.

Yeah, I'm looking at that too along with many other services....My wife thinks I tend to over research and she's probably right, but I like to look in every nook and cranny of every plan and network. Picking a cell phone is almost as bad as picking a politician to support.....you pick the lesser of all the evils and hope it works out.

Check out kittywireless.com,a wealth of info about page plus and they have a forum.They set me up on my iphone 4 ported my existing number all for free.I signed up with them for monthly autopay.Worth a look.You will be on verizon at a discount and no contract.

I just came across another cellular company called Affinity Cellular. Their add is in the Sept/Oct issue of the AAA Alabama Journey magazine.You must be a AAA member to be eligible. I have been under contract with AT&T, but I am going to a no-contract company. I have talked to their customer service a couple of times and was impressed with their plan. They use Verizon towers and the coverage on the lake appears to be fine. While I am not sure, I think you must purchase one of the phones they offer. Their selection is limited and range from a basic phone{free) to $150.00 for a Samsung Fascination smartphone. Customer feedback on the smartphone is excellent. Their website is www.affinitycellular.com and their phone number is 855-651-8033. I, too, have been looking at Pageplus which also uses Verizon towers. I live in Montgomery and have two sons and their families who are on contract with Verizon and they get good service both in Montgomery and at the lake. At this point, I think I will be choosing between Affinity Cellular and Pageplus.

I've looked at that too. Still leaning toward Straight Talk for the prepaid options. They have the best phone options, pricing, and choice of network. My daughter went with them about a month ago (off our Verizon plan) and so far it's looking good. They have had a little negative press, but it's almost all from folks violating the user agreement by tethering their phone.

Yea, Sprint always roams on Verizon. I have Sprint, and at the house north of Still Waters, I roam and maybe get one or two bars. I will sometimes pick up decent Sprint service out on the lake, but usually switches back to roam pretty soon.
As far as speeds, not great. If you actually get Sprint service with more than a couple of bars, it may be ok. Ultimately, if you want good speed on the net, you'll need a land cable line. If you have to be wireless, Verizon may be your best bet up there, but they are spotty as well.
