But thanks to the trial lawyers I am alive and well. On my way to Charleston today, on I-26 near Orangeburg, SC, a car attempted to occupy the same space as I. In the process of avoiding a collision with the other car I lost control of my car and engaged the cable restraining system that separated the two opposing lanes of traffic. My seat belt held and the air bag deployed...and as a result of those three safety mechanisms I walked away from a totaled car without a scratch. OK, I have a half dollar sized red mark on my hand...WFD. Not sure about the cable systems but the seat belts and air bags more than likely came from some attorney(s) filing lawsuits against the car companies. I applaud them because the combination of seat belts, air bags, and cable restraints probably saved my life today. My car is a total loss, because the cable restraints are very unforgiving and have a tendency to shred cars....but cars can be replaced. So here's to the trial lawyers who made this possible. Wow, glad you are ok!

Things on the road can happen in a split second.  Much like the drunk driver that crossed the road into our lane on highway 229 a while back because he was passed out and slumped over the wheel as his truck was doing 60+ MPH.  It would have been a 110+ MPH head on collision had my wife not had such great reflexes.  The only thing that happened to him was he spilled his tallboy all over his lap and totaled his truck when he hit a tree.  I guess being reeeeelaxed and passed out when you have an impact helps you survive.

Bottom line is technology and car safety has come a long way and glad it worked out in your favor.

Mr H.  Glad to hear you are OK.  Things happen so fast in those situations and the loss of control is scary.  By the way, don't give the trial lawyers too much credit for air bags.  I think Chrysler made them standard on all their cars in 1988 and most of the other manufacturers followed suit.  If I recall they weren't mandated by the govt until the late 90's.  They can be a life saver.

Glad you are OK.  Coincidentally I am in Charleston also. As to airbags and seat belts they were  developed and pitched to the car companies at the same time back in the 60's I believe, maybe 50's when manufacturers were looking for safety devices.  Belts won out due to lower cost even knowing that air bags were most likely the safest option.

Good to hear you survived the accident!

Interesting topic brought up in the responses....

American car manufacturers Nash (in 1949) and Ford (in 1955) offered seat belts as options, while Swedish Saab first introduced seat belts as standard in 1958

In the early 1970s, Ford and General Motors began offering cars equipped with air bags, initially in government-issue Chevrolets. G.M.'s Oldsmobile Toronado was the first domestic vehicle to include a passenger airbag

both from wiki.... but interesting none the less....

Crappy : )

Thanks to all for the nice words. Am back in Montgomery after a very conservative and wary drive back today. I would like to ask for your prayers, though. Not for me, but for the family of the 20 year old girl who lived next door to one of my most trusted colleagues in Charleston. On the same Interstate, about 30 miles closer to Charleston from my brush with fate, she drifted onto the "rumble strips" on I 26 last night, over corrected, lost control....and her life. I struggle with our Lord's plan when a young, vibrant life is taken, yet and old, broken down guy who has had a good run at life is spared. Please pray for them.
