I'm clueless when it comes to trolling for stripe. I mean, anyone can drag a couple of lures behind a boat and get lucky in the sloughs, but pulling in a big'un every once in a while would be fun. Any tips on locations, baits, lures?

Spoons? Live? Crankbaits?

I have outriggers on my boat...beneficial, or just use rod holders? Planer boards?

I understand it's a business venture for you, so I'm not trying to steal thunder...just maybe get steered in the right direction.

Also, my dad was telling me of some of his days of fishing back in the early 80's. He mentioned a type of minnow that is/was supposedly pretty unique to Martin, that was attracted by Ivory soap. He said he and his buddies would get lathered up, catch a bounty of them, and use those on sandy points to slaughter Martin bass. Any idea on this? He couldn't remember the name.

Trolling is effective in summer and fall, balance of the time live bait is the prefered. Spoons, swim baits, hair jigs seem to work well for trolling, for the dept, look where the bait it hanging and position lures either through or above it. Stripers are very nomatic so they congregate at different parts of the lake at different time. Tough to teach in an email, best is to get some seat time in your boat or hire a guide to sharten the learning curve.

Hello Century CC,
I agree with Deck Hand in that you could write volumes in response to the sweeping questions you ask. However, if you plan on going for stripes in the near future, you might try spoons or small swim baits at 35'-40'. You'll need downriggers to get to them at this time of year. They seem to be getting ready for their move from the Kowaliga basin back up river for the cooler months and have been seen massing in the Chimney Rock area. I'm guessing that you have no more than six weeks left to find them below Midway Island. Good luck!

Last year I did 3 videos with striper guide David Hare explaining about Lake Martin's stripes. See the link below. In this Part 3 he talks about fly fishing for striped but if you go to the bottom of the post, I link the first 2 editions. In those videos he talks a lot more generally about stripes, how to find them, and how he fishes for them in general.

it's a 9 weight rod, with sinking line, about a 7 foot total leader but the tippet section is 20 pound mono. I've had the best luck w Puglisi flies. See the link below and there are some pics of the rod and fly. The fish pictured in the set I caught on live bait. But in between the live bait hookups I was trying my fly rod, and David took the pictures then.

It's getting towards the time of year when the stripes should be a little more shallow, I think. Right?

John, I had a 9 ordered, but cancelled out. After trying to fish schooling areas this past weekend, I wasn't sure if
I was gungho enough to step up. Using a 7 wt., floating (wt. forward), and 9 foot or 7 foot leader (down to 8 lbs, tippet.) Fished off and on, 3 days and had one fairly good hit, and a couple of "boils.)
Naturally had a few wind knots, but couldn't keep the line from twisting. Never had the problem, anywhere near like it was. Fly fished from a very early age until the girl stage. Was using a pencil popper, and a shad like fly with a fairly heavy saltwater hook that should have prevented twisting..
BTW, I was fishing for spots.
Also, it looks like I may have to drop down to 6 wt. line, because the rod is going beyond "load."
Good luck. I will probably go back to spinning until I get a few filet meals for the winter.
